Help with Fireplace wall

I need help with this wall. I feel like it is boring. I’m not sure if I just need different display items or a bigger change. I toyed with painting above the fireplace a different color but due to the drop down on the ceiling would either have to make a cut line with paint straight up or continue the paint around the ceiling which I don’t love. Another option is to paint or put a neutral wallpaper on the wall behind the shelves on either side of the fireplace.

The walls are all light gray except for the accent wall next to the stairs that you can see in the second picture. I welcome any ideas on how to make this look better. Thanks!

If I was going to do an accent, I would do it on the back of the inset wall on each side of the fireplace. Paint or a simple wallpaper. I would get rid of the lower floating shelves to create openness. You could use larger accessories there and also large trays to keep groupings tidy. Some brass or nickel accents. If you accent above the fireplace, you would have to paint the fronts of the soffits which would not look as good.

Very nice home. Play down the soffets by emphasizing the tray ceiling visually.

I love the Charcoal accent wall in the entry. Use that same color on the ceiling here and give the room some intimacy in this open floorplan. Define and unify the two spaces.

Put plants in the windows for some softness. Books on the shelves bring a sense of coziness by the fire. Move the Fiddleleaf to an area with more light.

Here is my concept...the ceiling is the same shade as the accent wall. Yes the ceiling fan stays, I just didn't place it in my idea boards.

Interesting! I never thought about removing shelves. I do agree with accenting the insets though. I couldn’t figure out a way to make it work on the fireplace wall.

I ended up accenting over the fireplace after all. I just added molding so I didn’t have to paint the soffits. It’s a subtle change but I like it.
