i love the blue. Here in Jamaica we love the cozy look so mayb thats y but with out the rug looks nice too....just not as welcoming.....

I just got home from welcoming 700+kids back to school to find this discussion still going so I guess I'll chime in again - if I may - since I started it all. cbaker51, the walls are benj Moore linen white. It looks like pale butter and changes with the changing light all day and everything seems to go with it (even that blue rug of mine). Margo C, of course we are good! Lets think blue!

How about we end this discussion while we are all friends and move onto something else. I've got a thread going for my teeny weeny tv room and that really needs help. Some of you have been there. It's going nowhere except that I bought some art. BTW, Canada is not so far from New York so can I invite you over and we can all sit in the room and try to wish it were bigger?

Ill be around begging for help for a while. So many problems with a tiny cottage - small rooms, no closets, pitched roof, narrow doors and hallway so most furniture can't get in. And I can't forget a damp basement and a shoebox for a bathroom. So I hope you'll join me again.

It depends on your budget. When you get tired of blue, do you have the money to replace the rug with one of another color? I have neutral furniture and a neutral rug. I change it up 4 times yearly by changing out the throws and pillow covers and a few of the decorative things on table tops. I do the same thing in my neutral bathroom. There I change out the shower curtain, bath rugs and a few towels. Inexpensive changes but that way I don't get tired of the same look all year.

This is not the first time something like this has occurred especially on the longer threads. I always hope I click off before I get sucked in. It seems at times as though "my chain is being yanked" :0
Remember another poster polling paint color choices for the dining room and she opted for a colour that we hadn't even known was in the running after so many houzzers worked so hard to match her colours up against the curtains and art .
I'm not complaining (ranting?) just stating the facts and of course the dilemma poster can do what she thinks is best. We do come here of our own free will so we should expect anything can happen and accept it and move on but a lesson learned.
i will be more diligent in the future before I post.

The sisal. Very beach and casual and allow your pet pelican to be the star.

I think a nice vertical potted tree or plant would look lovely next to the fireplace, I'm thinking on the left side of the fireplace when you are looking at the photo.

readbetter, I think the sand makes the room look light and airy, and the blue looks cozier. And yes, I like the wood showing more. Whichever you choose is going to be right because you have a very specific style sense, you put a lot of thought into each and every detail to be sure it follows your aesthetic. And that's good, that's how you wind up with the design that is 'true' for you. It's what makes each of your decisions have that 'purity' which is your style. And that, I think is what draws so many of us to your little cottage...we see that the home is a true reflection of the homeowner!

Your room looks more interesting with a blue rug.

I know this is a poll about the color of the rug (I think the blue is preferable for most of the reasons given) but as I may not be down this particular road (dilemma) again I wanted to say that it appears that you now need the 10% pop of color in this room. For this I suggest you replace your lamps with a lamp(s) with an orange or coral base. Your current lamps are attractive but they seem to "disappear" from only a short distance. Once you've chosen the new lamps you can easily add one or two pillows in the same orange family, and your lovely peaceful room will only be more so. Good luck with your entire bungalow. I believe you said in one of your responses that you are a "decorator in training." There's no better place to start than one's own home!

The blue rug is too busy for this small room. The simplicity of the the beige is perfect. Just my opinion..again :)

Oh yes, and I agree with the pelican over the fireplace...I read someplace, long ago, you should not put a mirror over a fireplace....forgot why but I followed the advice.

Oh yes, now I remember....when you are sitting in a room with a mirror over the fireplace, it reflects the ceiling; so unless its something like the sistine chapel, it's not very attractive.

Your room is lovely. I like the blue; it gives the room a nice coastal look. If the budget allows maybe you can keep the sand rug for a switch up for other seasons.

Well, Houzzers, you were right again! I had a big party here yesterday and many people have not ever been to my home and no on has seen the rugs. Blue was ooohed and awwwwed over by all. My seven year old grandson felt so cozy that he put on the electric fireplace and snuggled on the sofa. I guess the blue one has to stay. Thanks for all your input.

Thanks all. Margaret, B, McBird is guarding the house from his roost on the upstairs landing. You folks have opened my eyes enough to at least consider color here and there. I'm on to finish the TV room. Just waiting for the new window (hopefully end of next week) and get the paintings hung. Then I'll invite you all over and we will start again..

The stripes in the blue make the room more interesting, but I prefer it with a sand colour. The blue seems to make the room smaller
