Need suggestions for our kitchen

Thank you all in advance! We're renovating our kitchen from the bottom up and would appreciate some advice on the layout. We're confused because the current layout that we are considering (pictured) doesn't fit the mold of kitchen "triangle" with easy accessibility between the fridge, sink, and stove because there is an island in the way. Unfortunately putting the sink on the island is space and cost prohibitive. Any suggestions for other layouts that may work?

How do you enter this room? There doesn't seem to be any doorways.

Can you post pictures of the current layout of your kitchen?

Looks like there is a window on the right. Not sure if it's possible to wrap the countertop around the entire left wall.

Sorry- I've included a few actual pictures from each side. Hopefully it's not too difficult to orient. Essentially, wall B is entirely open and leads to the living room, the portion of wall A is open and leads to the entry, there is a door next to the sink leading to a wrap-around deck, and the wall next to the fridge will be a set of french doors leading out to the patio/deck. There are 2 windows above the sink and above the dining table... Sorry for the mess!

what do you have sitting in the middle of the island plan?

If I'm reading your plan correctly you might solve one issue by moving the fridge into that corner by the sink for ease of prep and loading/unloading food from fridge to sink and counter. That would put two important elements of the triangle together and save lots of steps when you come home from the grocers.

the work triangle is a concept, not a written-in-stone rule. How do you use your kitchen? Are there two people working in it? If so, two triangles might be the solution you need and what you have essentially created with this plan.

The thing about center island - it can be a boon or a disaster. If you have to go around it each time you go back and forth to the major stations then you end up causing extra steps and the kitchen never feels efficient. If it works well as a landing space based on how you function in the kitchen, then it is a boon. If it makes the two walkways too small to function well, then it is a disaster.

It looks as if you have a pretty clear shot between the fridge and sink prep area. So the biggest question becomes - what happens when you use the range? Think thru some times you've cooked and imagine that happening in this plan - will the island being between the sink and the range be in your way? Or will it just be a place for pots/food to land and help make things flow for you? (one person cooks, one person washes.....)

What are your needs? Is this a forever home, and you need to age in place? Which door will you be coming in and out of the most? What was the previous plan? Why did it NOT work for you? Do you want the island for storage? Or can it be a moveable piece of functional furniture? Opening up the end wall to the porch will create more traffic through the space - imagine that traffic - does the island get in the way? Or does it make a place for things to land so the work stations (sink, range) can be free of people and "stuff"?

Get yourself a piece of sidewalk chalk or lots of rolls of blue tape - you are far enough along in the process you can draw on the floors and walls and "create" the kitchen as you now have it designed. Make yourself walk thru the space (AROUND the island) and pretend to cook or have people around. You will get a better feel if this is the right solution for you and then you can more easily modify the plan if need be.

I would turn the table and move more centrally and turn the island 90 degrees. The island will not impede your movement from sink to stove as much.
You have a lot of entrances that really limit where you can place things. I don't see much storage space in your kitchen. An island can really store a lot of kitchen equipment.

I agree you should try and add more storage. Could you do without the large doors to the deck since the door by the sink leads there? Then you could have much more storage and reconfigure your work triangle. Maybe you could make the single door by the sink into a double door?

Do you have a separate dining room ?

Thank you for all of your suggestions (especially your thought-provoking response catieb). Sorry for my delayed response- I had to be away for a few days. My wife and I certainly need to sit down and do some thinking... Thanks again!

Let us know your thoughts and reactions after you work thru this a few times.
I think it is just a matter of making sure it works for you.
I hope all is well and look forward to hearing more
