Leaves/branches on fruiting mango tree are dying

My mango tree started fruiting at the end of April. Over the past month, the leaves and branches near the top of the tree have started dying. It seems to look worse each day. The tree gets watered about once every week/every other week. I live in Long Beach, California where it has been abnormally cold and wet for the area this spring. Any ideas what is causing this? Do I just need to water it more? Thanks in advance :)

the grass would indicate to me.. that you are not in drought.. so i doubt water is an issue..

that looks like cold damage in late spring in my MI ... all the outer most pieces most exposed to temp fluctuations..

im not sure how that all works in CA...

you might want to contact your local COUNTY extension office..and see if any local plague is going around... especially related to mango..

ps: whats your CA definition of extremely cold... lol.. probably not mine... lol

Thanks for the response Ken! California cold = low 50’s lol. I’ve been searching the internet and am now concerned that it might be mango dieback. Any experience with that disease? If I cut off the dying branches and it’s not dieback, could I potentially shock the tree?

That tree looks diseased to me. I would take some leaves to a local nursery and get their advice. You might be able to treat it with some sort of foliage or root application depending what is causing the browning.I wouldn’t wait too long because if it’s an blight of sim kind, you don’t want it spreading to other trees near by. Fresh mangoes are wonderful, wouldn’t want to lose that tree. Good luck!
