I'm not a professional but here's my 2 cents. Are you putting a runner in the kitchen? I would think you would want a washable low pile rug in the kitchen. I myself wouldn't do that just becasue cooking, spills, stains and making it harder to clean. I dont think it will really matter as your family room although it is open concept will be fine as your furniture will create a visual separation.
