How big is the tree?

Can we see a picture of the whole tree?

Was it purchased from a plant seller, as a potted or ball and bur lapped specimen, or a woods dug that you did yourself.

It would be nice to know how it was planted and how it was taken care of afterwards, like how it was watered and anything else you can tell us about the planting and aftercare.

explain how you water.. when.. etc ... is the tree mulched???

and where are you.. big city name.. good to include that in all plant posts... is the area in drought.. like much of MI???

the first pic.. is spot on.. no major problem there.. perhaps it needs a bit more water...

obviously you have some leaf eating bug in the other pic..

BUT!!!! .... if you cant find the bug.. there is nothing to do... if you find it.. perhaps we can spray for it..

often a bug comes thru;. does damage. and moves on.. so we dont pollute by just spraying.. if we cant find the bug.. eh??

ps: ive had trees just about completely denuded by summer hail storms.. a little leaf damage is not that big a deal... we can speculate on that when we see the whole tree...

Thanks, guys! So, I'm in Vermont, thus the lack of response until now-we've been watching the rain carefully. Luckily we weren't hit the hardest with all the flooding. I live in the country, and this is planted in a sort of clearing on a slight slope with some woods around. It has some straw for mulch. It was a bareroot tree, about 5 feet tall plated about 6 weeks ago. I can get a full pic of the tree later this weekend, hopefully.

We water it with a gallon or so of water on days that it doesn't rain (or hasn't rained in the last 24 hours or so). Generally fairly clay-y soil. and we fence it to keep the deer off until it gets tall enough to handle being nibbled by them.

Just from what you've told us already, and depending on how porous of a soil you're dealing with, watering every 24 hours is unnecessary for a sugar maple. They are a 'high ground' plant.

After the first couple of weeks, you want to make sure it doesn't get too dry and generally one a week is plenty good unless you have heavy clay soil, then you don't need to water that much.

Another thing that comes to mind is, with bare root, once you unpackage them to plant, you don't want a lot of sun on the roots or let them dry at all. But being your tree is putting out new leaves, the roots must be okay. The most important thing is that it is planted at the correct depth depicted below.
