Exterior makeover

We recently had a tornado and have to replace the roof shingles and paint the house. We will also replace the exterior lighting. I am open to painting the brick as it is a weird peachy tan color that I have always hated.

We will be adding a tree on the left side as we lost a huge spruce in the storm. I also need the exterior to coordinate with the stone wall in the yard.

Can't wait to hear your ideas.

I wouldn’t paint the brick. But Lyn’s suggestion above is beautiful!

Another vote for keeping the brick. A darker roof and getting rid of that bright white trim around the windows would go a long way to improving the house. As the stone wall looks like a pretty similar color to the house, I'd be happy with it as is.

What about painting part of the house and keeping some of the brick - it may feel very different then. Here is my attempt to show that...

You could leave the front portico and the front and side of the garage, then paint everything else. I also like a roof with a little more contrast to the main structure.

    Good luck!

How ugly is that ? Sorry but painting brick is IMO the fastest way to devalue a home so if that is the plan go for it. I think the idea from Lyn is perfect .

Thats harsh - just throwing out ideas. I don't like painted brick either but it appears to be popular down south. I wasn't suggesting a specific color , just an idea.

This would be no different than houses that are mixed with siding and brick

Lyn's idea is great , but the OP already stated that she hates the brick color - so what is her option?

Let's be very careful about painting brick as opposed to limewashing brick.

You can't just put the same paint on the brick that you would a frame house. Experts are finding that with acrylic paint, the brick below holds moisture and then the brick and mortar becomes completely unstable. Over time exterior walls bow out and pull away from the framework of the house. It may have been a contributing factor in the partial collapse of the building in Iowa. Brick must BREATHE. There are masonry paints and limewash which allows it to breathe.

You could add larger lanterns to the face of the portico.

Thanks everyone, if we decide to paint the brick it would be professionally done by a company with experience painting it, using specialty masonary materials. The brick isn't structural, its just facing on the front of the house, so loss of integrity isn't an issue, but replacing it wouldn't make sense. I do like the idea of limewashing but I'm not sure the HOA would allow that, I could ask.

Unfortunately, any white around the window is part of the window and not paintable. I love the idea of adding lighting to the front of the portico, and may look into if that is possible.
