update exterior

I would like to give the exterior updated look. I was thinking remove porch rail. Wrap posts in cedar and add cedar gables. Possibly paint shutters black and maybe garage door. Please give thoughts, on a budget.

A prettier garage door would be nice - a cedar look to go with the posts. Cute house, with the busy brick, I would keep the rest of the house simple and maybe not do cedar gables. Hopefully someone can do a mock up for you to see how it looks.

I like the siding color as well. It goes well with the stone and the roof. I don't think you want to paint the garage door black - it's already dark enough. You don't want to create a black hole effect. If anything, paint it the same color as the siding so it blends in better. A garage door with windows would look better. I can't tell how far off the ground the front porch is. Be sure if you remove the rail there is no danger of people falling off it into the bushes.

Agree. Black would turn the garage door into a black wall that pulls too much focus.

    Really cute house!

The shutters do not belong, to remove the railing will create a dangerous porch IMO. You have cedar gables they are painted so that would need to be removed and replaced so some idea of budget is helpful.

Remove the railing, it cuts what should be a nice view of your house in half, and slices through the view you get from the windows. It doesn't belong.

I don't have great skills, but just using the paint visualizer from SW, this shows how a lighter garage door would look:

    Maybe a brighter front door?

maybe check code violation if you do want to remove the railing. I know it doesn't seem like big of a drop but it could still be a safety issue. Not sure.

Black is too harsh IMO. Use Charcoal Gray

Leave it alone. It’s a perfectly lovely home.

Look at the colors in the stone and your roof if you want to make paint color changes, I don’t see any black. If you can remove the shutters and repair the holes behind them, do it. They aren’t appropriate to this window. It’s too bad the railing is in your sight line if you sit on the porch, but you may need a railing of some height if the bylaw requires it. I’d consider a lighter paint color on the entry door if it’s painted and not a stain. What material is used on the back and sides of your home, all siding?

Thank you all. I think I’m pleased with this right now. Might move the Japanese Maple in the fall.
