Help with entry appearance

We have an older very unique Spanish syle house that needs a little face-lift to make it look more modern. What are some inexpensive ideas we could do to help out the appearance? We are open to painting the dark wood and doing some inexpensive upgrades. Please help!

I would remove the clock over the entry.

enlarge the art on the stairway, if you feel you need something there.

add a bench and large art. you have great height, show it off.

    I really like your space.

Your art is nice but could use some work. The one by the door is hung too high. I can see that the switches are in the way, I would suggest finding something else for that space. The art by the stairs needs more oomph. They get lost in the space. The clock doesn't really work there and is definitely not modern.

Have you considered a new, more modern carpet or runner for the stairs? An area rug by the door would look great as well.

    -redo the art

    -move the clock

-look for a new stair runner and entry rug

Personally, I would touch as little of it as possible. I might put a tinted textured paint treatment on the brick wall -- but really really subtle. I would take down the clock and get a more dramatic vertical piece of art for the wall that is opposite the stairs. I'd try for a striking new runner, and give the planting area more love.

Depending on what big art you put on the empty wall, you might try for something complimentary going up the stairs, but leaving that space blank is okay. What might be nice is just a few pools of light washing the wall.

Agree with the above - I think the art and accessories (and table) could be much larger and simpler - the space is quite grand so undersized items can look unintentionally fussy

    I like the entry.

redoing the staircase would really up the ante to the overall look. the brown carpet just doesn't work. if you have wood treads, refinish them, add some riser tiles. railing is fine, maybe get it freshed up w/a coat of paint?

or, redo treads to match the other wood, paint risers same as wall. add black/cream accents. (see below for that)

If you like the blacks/whites/creams, I'd do this tile on the risers. would look amazing w/the dark treads

    For now,

remove the clock and the round table.

maybe play up the spanish look w/something like this

took away the clock, added the bench, the rug, and a diff light

bench idea would look a million times better than that round table.

console table, taller plants, runner, and a LARGE colorful art piece for the stairs.

or, look for a console table. antique would be fine. anything in wood w/that old style spanish/old world feel to it. A runner is also needed. (notice the stairs w/the saltillo/tiles)

runner in the colors shown above, ,maybe a few textured items

both of these are more netural in color and textures. the woods/blacks/creams w/the textured items would be perfect w/your wall and floor

    love your skylights and plants.

more spanish revival with pops of color.

if you did want to upgrade the stairs, go this route w/talavera type of tile on the risers.

    For sure lose the carpet!

quick photoshop. would look really good!

    what's on your treads?

Agree that you should remove the clock and all the bitty art on the wall. Look for a beautiful large Southwestern skyscape to replace your current art.

Look for rustic Spanish/Texan style wood table or cabinet to replace the one you have. Search Ebay or Etsy for a beautiful Southwestern bowl in orange or turquoise for table top.

    Or a rustic wood bench.

Think about an authentic Southwestern wall hanging for the wall. A warmer white paint would harmonize better with your reddish floor and wood door. Also change out stair runner for something colorful:

I like Beth's staircases, they match very good to existing Spanish style. But I think that OP wants something modern instead traditional. I lean more to housegal ideas ( no for stripes runner).

You may enjoy checking out lonefox.com. He has purchased a large Spanish Colonial house that he’s redecorating room by room. In addition to his web site, he also does youtube videos that show the process. He mixes modern with vintage, and I’m finding it quite fascinating. Here are a couple of photos.

If you don't love the terracotta tiles for the staircase, you can go with a similar vibe with less color.

This one is done with Tabarka tile.

Too bad someone painted the brick/stone with regular paint. It would have looked much better with a Romabio limewash.

Here is another staircase with a narrower color palette.

Yes If to go with Spanish vibe for stairs then better to go with black and white or something similar with less colors.
