Judging a Hydrangea Characteristics

last modified: 3 years ago

Maybe it's me, but for new plantings, whaddya say is the minimal benchmark on judging it's performance when deemed established.

.

The roots of these things seems to grow pretty fast but I kinda/wanna state my findings......for new MAC plantings from 6 Years ago, I can definitely state this year, things just seem very established. No signs or outer edges of the leaves being crisp. It did get some late frost damage so I did remove like 2 feet off the majority of them. I wanted to open it up for new growth, I did cull out some of the larger thicker stems that were in the direct proximity of the new buds on base.

The result for this year =

No signs of any crispy brown edges on a any leaf..maybe H20 ratio to less height/foliage ?

Florets may wilt in the max heat but always recover

Blooms on old wood are looking great and not exhausted yet.

And New Wood has grown to same/similar existing height already with a decent mid size brocolli in Late July.

Off to the next new observations, to see it will generate -new buds- like I'm seeing on a different Hydrangra (can do).....

.I actually did buy 2 of the Sky Views due to it's touted abilities (after removing all the late frost damage thinking it would be a fairly bushy leafy small bloom plant), but strangely it has got a good amont of blooms and the -developing- bloom from new one is pretty much on arrival in Late July. I'm at the point where I feel like optimizing whatever is growing - and if SkyView is a better performancer, out with the old and in with the new...

Too bad I have another 4 more years to go till I get to compare and contrast
