I have common purslane and I yank it when I see it. When it's small. very easy to get rid of. I do believe it's a prodigious seeder.

Fine until it flowers, then it will be everywhere. You can hoe it pretty easily though.

I will no longer buy it or plant it, even in a pot. It spreads like wildfire here and was taking over everywhere. I killed all of it finally, and hope to never see it again in my yard.

It is a rapidly spreading weed, but it's also very healthy to eat--high in Omega 3.

Which Purslane is it? Weedy P oleraceae or ornamental P grandiflora? I think people might be referring to two different plants in their responses.

Rosa, I'm surprised you have either species self sowing. I've never seen either do that here. In fact I've only ever seen P oleraceae growing wild in hotter climates than ours.

Maybe because you are in the dry east?

They seed vigorously in gardens. Of course you don't want to eat the ones in a driveway.

The ornamental seeds like crazy, everywhere. In driveway cracks, rock beds....it's a massive nuisance here. Just like the weedy variety.

I have golden purslane, which I have never seen flower, plus a green one with a yellow flower and also, portulaca, (an ornamental I call moss rose. in the gravel bed) which can seed about unless the snail population is in the ascendent (in which case, nada). I also have something called winter purslane or miner's lettuce, which REALLY seeds about and also lamb's quarters - another annoying weedy edible and, worst of all, corn salad (valerianella). I often wish I had never introduced all these odd saladings cos I NEVER get around to picking and eating them (apart from sorrel).

It's the common name thing though...a whole heap of things get called 'purslane' (by me), with no real differentiation.

I'm impressed. None of those except miners' lettuce and lambs lettuce would survive in my conditions.

Lambs lettuce is ok but it's a pain to harvest those tiny plants usually in cold weather, probably raining. Then they need a lot of washing to get the soil off and trim off the manky leaves.

Exactly...which is why they end up largely ignored by me. I have a hard enough time grovelling around picking a few French beans before they go over. I often planned to grow these little ssaladings over winter, in trays in the greenhouse (along with micro-greens)...but that's as far as I ever get - making a list of 'possibles'.
