2 leader forming. Leader on the right is higher on the tree and is where I trimmed the dieback from last year off.

I'd remove the leader on the right at the v-crotch and limb up the lower radial branches to raise the canopy 2-3'.

This will push upward growth on the remaining leader and the radial branching will spread out on that leader and rest of tree.

Then in 2-3 yrs you can raise the canopy a bit more and eventually sufficient height to walk under. You'll also want to provide some protection from deer as they will rub that bark off until the trunk gets thick enough that they can't get it between their antlers.

Nyssa's require very little pruning and best to develop structure with a single leader. I think most of the cold is over in our area and usually prune my trees in late February. Gonna prune a Yoshino Cherry today as is sunny and in mid 40's.

Personally I would not touch the tree. It looks like the tree is growing normally. Yes you think there are now two leaders. The tree knows which of the leaders it is going to promote to obtain it next growth spurt.

I would suspect that if left alone, the tree will concentrated on the branch between what you think are the two leaders, and you will be back on this board worried about the branches that appear in the next growth spurt. I say this as from your picture, that branch appears to be develop, the branches that will be come next years leaders

I have and oak tree that I plant about 13 years ago. Each year we went through the two leaders dilemma. Each year I would watch the tree decide what is to be its next leader, the next year we would repeat the process. To day the tree is about 35' tall and a beautiful straight specimen in my yard.

Yeah will just checking back on this comment. Actually limbed up all my trees a bit a couple days. They are all going into the fourth year. I am pretty confident this is a two leader situation waiting to happen. Both are coming off where the tip die back was the previous year. Good news is this will be the first year of no die back which happens after wildfires a little more established.
