Faux painting dates the entry way, and the red makes it very dark. I would pick a light shade of one of the colors in your slate, that also goes with the mustard color, so you have a lighter and brighter and more welcoming entry way. By the way, the doggie peeking around the corner, is adorable, and he looks exactly like mine.

Your comments about looking for a shade in the slate and how the faux painting dates the entry are constructive. It's making me think I must also eliminate the mustard faux painting in the rest of the first floor. There is so much wood (ceilings/beams that I hesitate to go towards more browns and creams, but color scares me-hence why we have not painted in over 20 years!

I love how the moody dark entry frames the approach into the bright house. Even without the dog, it's dramatic and fun. Color scares you? Did you really say that after posting that entry full of big beautiful color? 😄

Will you keep the rug? I'd try out some colors from it if you can find ones that go with the floor. Maybe a less saturated version of one of the blues? That might be appealing with the painting at the end.

I would not worry about whether or not something is dated--your home doesn't follow current trends anyway. You get to do your own thing.
