I think the size is awkward with the chairs. I'm assuming you don't need a foot rest for both chairs at the same time, so I would get one to go with one of the chairs, more scaled in size to the chair. If you could get one to match the chairs, that would be ideal, or something contrasting or even a print.

I think the room could benefit from a rug. It would be soft underfoot, add some extra pattern and texture to a room furnished in solid neutrals, and define your conversational grouping. Somethng like this, if you want to go traditional:

You need a big old oriental rug to tie the room together. Then the ottoman color repeats the floor color instead of fading into it

I'm not sure about the rug but I love the piano in front of that huge mirror. It is a fabulous room.

Then ditch the rug idea. I think the ottoman is the wrong size. I would replace it with a coffee table. If you really want a place to rest your feet, I would suggest two wood footstools. Leave them next to each chair when not in use.

Hi. Most definitely not a professional here so take these suggestions with a large grain of salt. The two bookcases flanking the mirror (was that a doorway?) don't seem to be adding to this elegant room. Have you considered removing them and placing the piano on the wall to the left (or right) of the mirror? And possibly scooting the chairs and couch closer to each other? The piano in front of the mirror appears to be protruding into the conversation space. That may just be the angle of the picture, though.

I think it looks odd to have the chandelier there with nothing under it. If you don't plan on using a coffee table then I would suggest moving the chandelier so that it is closer to the piano grouping and not in the middle of the room. Also, I agree with Sue Pedersen that the bookcases seem a bit out of place.

About the bookcases - if I remove them and put the piano on one side of the mirror, what would go on the other side of the mirror? I have wall hangings (paintings) that are not as tall as the ones you're showing, they used to hang above the bookcases.

I would not put the piano beside the mirror. I like the configuration of it in front of the mirror. Do you have any photos of the bookcases on either side of the mirror with the artwork above?

no i don't. and i don't have the paintings handy either. they hung above the bookcases nicely. i also like the way the mirror frames/blends with the piano. the good part is, that i can always move things around. Now that you brought to my attention the position of the chandelier, I would get a coffee table to put beneath it, but: i need comfortable foot rests for those light-color chairs, so get a leather ottoman that either gets pulled closer to the chairs when wanting the foot rest, or bring the chairs closer to the coffee table? Would love a leather coffe table/ottoman rather than wood. More comfortable for the feet. And am NOT anxious to invite food/drink into this room at all. what do u say?

I think a leather round ottoman/coffee table would be perfect. I don't blame you about food and drink. I don't allow any food outside of my kitchen.

Beautiful home with quality flooring and details not often seen. I think the furnishings all need to be brought closer together and the piano goes then behind the sofa. A pair of period style foot stools would work best. That one is too big for the scale of the chairs. However, if you move chairs and sofa closer together it could act as coffee table and foot rest.

Pair of floor lamps in corners and a couple tall plants in bay window. A pretty antique rug would be fabulous and anchor the space.

Add a pair of leopard velvet lumbar pillows to the chairs. Gorgeous. Here are some options. The rug (I know you are adverse but) I picked a 10 x 10’ square which would bring sofa and chairs together without huge rug. Might be compromise. 😊

Understand but just had to give you my best input. Always up to poster to make final decisions. All the more reason for a patterned set of footstools or a longer ottoman with black and white pattern. That would actually make things more cohesive which in turn would be more calming. 😊

A couple ideas.

Benches are usually 18” high and seats on chairs like yours are usually 18” so make sure you get proper height of foot rests as you move forward.

With piano behind sofa it’s back shouldn’t be a problem. You can always drape a beautiful shawl over top and back to distract the eye if needed. Not a big problem. It’s always good to have pianist facing guests so that location would be great. Bay window would be worst due to heat and cooling from outside which isn’t good for any piano. Inside walls and spaces are best.

Imo a good spot for a little pattern might be on the piano bench. Perhaps you could use one of the benches posted by Flo Mangan. Another idea would be to replace the bench with an upholstered chair. I have a chair at my piano and love the look.

I agree with the others. Your pieces are nice, but they’re disconnected. I really think you need a pattern on something— whether rug, art, ottoman— that unifies the colors. I’m sensitive to visual noise too but have found a patterned unifying piece, even if it seems busy on its own, can have a soothing effect on the whole room. Instead of all these separate pieces just floating, they’re all visually grounded.

I love those floors and would be hard-pressed to cover them with a rug. I can understand the reluctance.

When I played piano I sometimes appreciated a slick surface to help slide quickly from high notes to low notes. So the current leather one could be fine. I had wood.

I kinda like the caramel, especially with the red. Glad it will always be in the wood.

If you like the ottoman's function but think it doesn't go, maybe put a slipcover on it. Red velvet? Or something with texture if you don't like patterns of color.

And don't put the piano in the window if you like it unless the windows have been replaced with modern ones and the walls insulated and the blinds don't open. It'll age prematurely.

The back side of the piano is probably perfectly nice in a sturdy industrial kind of way. If it's exposed, expose all of it. You can't go part way and just have a bit showing because THAT looks like a mistake. :)
