Sorry, I am finding your OP confusing. You say "tall pantry cabinet", but your photos show built-in microwave setups, not a MW installed in a pantry cabinet. Your photos show an oven cabinet not a pantry cabinet. A pantry cabinet has shelves or drawers. An oven cabinet is as you show - it houses built-in ovens and is not in a pantry.

Many people have pantries with a microwave sitting on one of the shelves. Which are you talking about - a built-in MW setup or a pantry cabinet setup with a MW on a shelf?

Also a convection MW is not so great for doubling as a regular oven.

I would pick an option that puts the microwave at counter height, which is the perfect place, when you are taking out very food.

It wasn’t clear from your picture where you intend to put the tall cabinet/built in.

A built-in microwave may be an issue in a couple ways - it may be more expensive, a replacement if needed may not fit the built-in opening and the pictures you show do not have a landing spot for hot microwaved dishes/mugs.

I have and find useful a (custom) cabinet that houses, among other things, my microwave. The lower has two pullout shelves behind cabinet doors. The upper sits on the granite counter (for coffeemaker/toaster and landing spot for hot microwaved items) with a shelf above it (for microwave) with a cabinet at top. There are retractable doors that cover the middle so it can be left open but when closed it looks like one cohesive unit. If/when the microwave breaks, I don’t have to worry about the replacement’s dimensions and I don’t need a more expensive built-in model.

You can not do a built in MW in a pantry cabinet behind a cabinet door. That would violate it’s clearance requirements and be a fire hazard.

What you picture are oven cabinets, with no door covering the MW.

I can see that my original post could be confusing! I already have the microwave pictured. It’s a built in style, with a pull down door. I want to build a cabinet that accommodates that microwave. I don’t want the microwave to be behind a door, or inside a cabinet. I want it to be built in, the way it’s designed to be. This microwave will be an addition to the range i already have, but it has the extra capabilities noted.

There will be a countertop area right next to the microwave for a landing spot.

The photos showing ovens in the cabinet best portray how i want it to look, but with the microwave i have, rather than an oven. Some of the photos show two ovens, or a built in microwave/oven combination. I just want a built in microwave, with a drawer below and cabinets above.

Maybe the first example shows what I’m looking for best, as it looks like it has a bottom drawer, then a microwave (assuming the top one is an oven, and the bottom a microwave), and then cabinets on top. I would like it to look like that, but with only one unit, the microwave. That below counter height looks good to me, though I’d also consider a bit higher, at counter height.

IMO you get the install directions for your MW I do not like built in MWs since they do not last forever and when they die sure as anything the size will be different . But I aslo think pantry items are probably more often used than the MW ao not sure how easy a really high cabinet for pantry items will work. Do you mean the MW you have now above your range or a different one? What is going on with your range it needs to be above the counter for the top. Where in your kitchen are you planning to put that MW I see nothing that says a pantry cabinet so maybe show that. To me it looks like you are refacing cabinets so maybe a bit more info

A custom cabinet maker can build any kind of custom microwave cabinet that you want in a full kitchen remodel. You are replacing all of your cabinets, right? Among other changes, such as the new dedicated electrical circuit for the MW, and adding more lighting, new counters, etc etc.?

@Ellen Did you find a solution for your built-in microwave and cabinet? I am facing the same dilemma and trying to figure out how best to install the microwave that looks similar to the single oven in wall cabinet.
