Kitchen with an impossible Layout - Please Help

We are slowly restoring a 1906 Dutch Colonial and want to return kitchen to its original location (the current location in an old enclosed porch is worse). We are really struggling to fit a modern kitchen into the constraints of the original space. We would really appreciate some insight.

A few things

- The built-in spans the wall it can't be moved. Its actually built through the wall and is contiguous with a full built in on the other side (like the drawers share a box). It would be a travesty to rip it out. I'm more invested in the history/archecture of the house than the kitchen.

- Door locations are fixed - we could move the living room door over 12 inches (to the built-in) but that doesn't solve our layout problem. There is something expensive and fixed on the other side of all of these walls (a bathroom, a fireplace, that built-in, or stairs).

- I don't think we can close any of the doorways. The traffic flow in this house is weird and all natural walkways just converge on this room - but I will think on in some more.

- Pretty sure I can vent a sink and the hood from any of the proposed locations

I know none of these are ideal, but is there there something I'm missing?

- If we do L-shaped counter/appliances then the island can only be about 40"x40"

- If we do one wall of appliances the island can be 64 x 40

*Most promising suggestion so far (thanks herbflavor!) is rotating the island 90 degrees as long as you don't think walking around it will be too bothersome.

Thanks!
