I'd select classic styles that will still be in style 4 years from now. Not too traditional but transitional in style. Additonally, I'd select mostly black or black/brass fixtures so they stand out from the architecture of the home

Those are lovely dining chairs that look pretty washed out against that trestle table. I'd paint them to zhuzh them up.

I installed black fixtures similar to what Beverly is showing in my house not too long ago to replace dated brass fixtures. I would however put a ceiling fan in the two story family room. Rooms with tall ceilings that open to the second floor need help circulating the air in the summer. I installed a white fan so it doesn't stand out, but you can do something else if you want it to make a statement. Hang it about six feet down from the ceiling.

I never put unshaded fixtures in my house.
