too many skylights

We have a open kitchen living space that is 19’x28’. I was going to put 4 skylights in two in kitchen two above living. Does anyone have too many skylights?

Is this a new build or a remodel? If you're living there now I assume you have been frustrated by the lack of light. Does this room only have eastern or northern light? Do you have a drawing showing where and what size the skylights are going to be?

Cutting holes in your roof? Yes, one is too many. Skylights, in my experience, come in one of two forms, the ones that leak now and the ones that will be leaking before too long.

If you go ahead make sure you've got an installer who is extraordinarily fussy about flashing details. I'd look long and hard at seriously uprgaded lighting first, as well as opportunities for additional windows in the walls that will bring both views and light.

Any skylight will leak eventually. So, the more you install the more change of a leak occuring. That being said they are awfully nice and can really open up a room.

We’ve been living in our house for 15 years and skylights were installed about 20 years ago. At some point I’m sure we’ll encounter a leak in one or more of the three (in different rooms), but the repair will be worth having had the added light. When covered with snow, it‘s shocking to see the difference.

How many depends on a few things: how dark rooms are, roof/ceiling configuration, locations/relationship to each other and size/style. Try searching multiple skylights on Pinterest to see what resonates and suits.

I would need more info. I like the looks of skylights in some situations but a dark space is still a dark space on rainy days or at night. I think improving all the lighting is the first step . I have huge windows and I still find on a cloudy day I turn on the lights in my kitchen to work. I have had too many clients with leaking sky lights so best to get real info about whoever is doing yours . If you post pics of your spaces it could be helpful too.

I have two non-leaking skylights in my LR. Certain times of the morning the bright light makes a huge glare on the adjacent open kitchen's stainless steel sink. So, I am thinking yes, you can have too many especially in a kitchen with so many reflective surfaces.

I've had a skylight since the 90"s in a bedroom with no leaks. Also 1 in kitchen sine 2013 no leaks. Get a solar shade for it and the sun is not an issue.

A properly installed modern skylight isn't going to leak. Ever. Geesh.

We had 3 skylights installed when we built our home 24 years ago, they have never leaked!
