So we need a lot more information…what do you need/want in each area? How is the back yard used? What is behind the garage door? A room or a storage area? Would you access the patio there from the steps or by opening the garage door.

Are those screen porches on both levels? Can't tell by the pictures.

I guess I am looking for flowers, shrubs etc. the top part has the screened porch. I want to make the backyard into flower beds, I’m really not sure where to start. The back gets full sun during the day. I thought I would start with plantings around the patio and house first. I’ll see if I have some more pictures I can post, if not I’ll take them when I get home.

You need to give us more info. Where in z7? Virginia? Mississippi? Oklahoma? Arizona? They’re all very different from each other.

Are you mostly interested in growing flowers? Shrubs? Trees? Vegetables?

Do you need privacy from neighbors? Room for kids or dogs to play? A big patio for cooking and entertaining?

Are you an experienced gardener? Do you have lots of time to devote to your yard?

Answers to these questions plus a sketch of your whole property drawn TO SCALE on graph paper would be enormously helpful.

(And I’m very curious as to you why you dug out that slope, creating an erosion hazard. I create new beds and enlarge beds all the time and I NEVER dig.)

It’s hard to make landscaping suggestions when there are other considerations. The patio areas are like “outdoor rooms”…do you currently have them furnished the way you want to use them? After developing the furnishings layout on the patio, is there an optimal entrance point(s) to the patio? Then some sort of pathway from the bottom of the steps to the patio entrance(s) is needed. Then do you want to keep those “outdoor rooms” open to the yard or bordered by a hedge? The answers to these questions will help to determine what sort of landscaping is needed.

For landscaping, consider some colorful shrubs and perennials. Maybe a small tree for shade? And don't forget some decorative stones or mulch paths. It'll make a big difference.
