need help with laundry / mud room

We have cabinets above the washer/dryer across from this space, but looking to demo and build out space with shelves about 26"H to accommodate large laundry baskets underneath as well as a shoe shelf directly below main shelf (see 1st pic). Looking for ideas for the rest of the area. Should it be L-shaped? Cubbies above? More shelves above? Cabinets above? It will be mainly for shoes and some storage.
