Masculine bedding and upholstery help!

last modified: 2 years ago

This studio apartment is our guest room and my husband's office. Does anyone have ideas for a masculine, handsome looking coverlet / bedspread / quilt for the bed? I don't want grey, no wool (allergy), no solid colors. I love men's suiting or a Ralph Lauren look.

I'll select reupholstery fabric for the wingback based on the bed cover, and want to reupholster the chaise in a natural linen look that almost disappears into the rug.

Here are two pieces I have found. I like the black color of the West Elm piece but am afraid it might look too boho? I'd love more suggestions. Having a hard time finding manly bedding!

West Elm Olive and Black - I like black

If you like RL, do Elaine actual tartans? You can search under plaids & tartans then see who may have more subdued colors. A lot use navy and not black, though.
Eddie Bauer had a dark tartan. Also tattersall. By searching patterns you may link to more masculine bed linens, but not just solid neutrals.

Eastern Accents has some options ... good quality, but pricey.

Wow, I am loving Eastern Accents. Had never heard of them. Alas, more than I want to spend of guest room bedding.

Marmigard, I took your search advice. I’ve come up with a lot of comforters but not coverlet or quilt weight pieces.

Ah— agreed, more sophisticated quilts and coverlets seem harder to find than puffy comforters.

I may be in same boat eventually— I can use a comforter all winter, because I need more warmth than one blanket or coverlet, but the king size comforters are too big for my washer, so I pay for commercial washing. I have thought about fever+ covers, as that also appeals to my yen for variety, but I hate wrestling with them.

So am thinking about using some coordinated thinner quilts, blankets used together.

    Company store. black and cream

Btw? Takes more than a coverlet to make a sensational bed. : )

    Ya gotta jooooosh !

    Pottery Barn....DUVET ,not coverlet

What is a fever cover? Tell me more!

I'd like to get the coverlet in place first so I can coordinate upholstery fabric with it. Then I'll figure out other bedding pieces. This is a steam radiator apartment in a pre-war building and most of my guests have seemed comfortable with a coverlet year round. I'm a terrible judge because my internal thermostat is so out of whack.

Lots of choices on the Ralph Lauren website.

Thanks beeboo! I will post pics after. This has been a long term project started almost a year ago. Here is the room before, you can hardly see the windows.

Funnily enough, I have this exact same table, although I should say almost-exact-same, as mine is too low for me to used it as a desk, even with a small chair. I bought mine to use it for plants, and am particularly happy it is on wheels.

LL Bean has a flannel comforter cover set in a nice masculine plaid. They also have a percale blue check one. Lands End too - nice flannel sets.

What about Pendleton? Do they have anything you might like? They have beautiful bedding.

I like Macy's hotel bedding collections . Decently priced and have had 2 different ones for 15 yrs still look awesome. I like coverlets better than duvets so where I live it gets cold in the winter I put a duvet no cover under my coverlets .

UPDATE - I purchased both West Elm coverlets. The quality is really terrible so I am sending them back. Was a good exercise though to see how darker colors work in the space and they really make the headboard pop in a nice way. Still waiting on the third coverlet shown above. I'm still looking and am open to ideas. I'm looking for a coverlet or a quilt though, not a duvet. Will try Home Goods and TJ Maxx today.

@Mytwo Cents - I love that you have the same table! We got it in an antique store in Bucks County PA. One of the wheels fell off in transport so we need a replacement. It has been a good desk for my husband so long as he uses a low chair.

I’d first decide on your color scheme and then narrow down upholstery fabric. Suggest going with a solid quilt to complement fabric, which opens up so many more bedding options and will be an easier base for layering - which is key for a RL look. Have some cushions made up in the same fabric and add a soft throw. See the look in the second bed’s picture below.

Pottery Barn: this one has lots of colors and is a lovely fabric. Thought this color scheme would tie into the rug.

Pottrty Barn: less color options but it‘s velvet for a lux feel.

I want to use performance fabric for the chaise and wingback. There are not many patterened option in performance so I was hoping to find a handsome patterned coverlet and use the more solid upholtery fabric to compliment. I adore the window pane fabric you posted but cannot find any above 30k rubs and I know this furniutre needs more durable fabric than that. Bummer.

I just think it is going to get boring having every piece of textile be solid.

Any other thoughts for handsome, masculine performance upholstery fabric? I’ve been on the hunt.

Im returning these cheapy West Elm coverlets but here they are in the room to give an idea of what it looks like with pattern on the bed along with possible fanric for the chaise and wing back. (The colors look different that in real life. As close as I could get.)

I love those pics. So handsome. We use this bed more as a daybed of sorts. We hangout on it at night and watch TV, my husband will sit on his laptop and work (though damgerous tisk of accidental napping during the workday), and friends sit on it and chat when we are visiting together. I crack out lots of pillows throws blankets, comforters for guests who sleep over. But on a daily basis we dont want to use it as a layered bed look. Also Also, my parents will be staying here a lot and they loathe having to move decorative bedding to go to sleep. They are simple blanket and pillow folks.

We just painted and our windows are so quirky that blackout cellular shades are what every window treatment person has said will work bed in here.

I like your ideas though though, please keep them coming. I’m probably just hindered by the solid linen baffle coverlet trend. May it end soon and be replaced by a heavy cotton woven masculine prints trend.

Do you have art selected for the space above the bed? That would help narrow down bedding and upholstery choices.

One option is to confine the manly prints to the pillows.

You could also think about putting a manly color on the walls. I love the way the portrait art looks against this dark wall on the photo Jilly posted.

ff, isn’t that dark green fabulous?

Kendrah, I added some Ralph Lauren bedding to my post above. I love RL everything. I could fill this thread. (Of course you wouldn’t need all those pillows or layering, I’m just showing for the comforters and mixing patterns.)

Anyway, can’t wait to see how the room progresses!

Maybe a plaid lap blanket and two snoozing beagles are all I need to amp up the Ralph Lauren vibe! Off to look at vintage quilts on Etsy.

This one fits your description of masculine. They have it in a duvet as well.

You could use burgundy to cover your wingback chair.

These are all from Wayfair and are crazy expensive, but wanted to share as it seems to be the vibe your looking for. The first one is a bluish gray but way be too gray for your taste. If you like the look, but not the price you could look for less expensive pieces to create a similar look.

I love the Dillards Ralph Lauren comforter. (Didn't know Dillards still exists.) Wish it were a coverlet and less expensive. But, will keep it in the back of my mind. The olive window pane pillow on that same bed is great too.

Emily, I'm with you on crazy expensive. But thanks for the inspiration none the less.

Price, quality , delivery etc. Also understanding the marketplace and what is available.

A coverlet is lighter in weight than a quilt, ninety percent of the time. A pattern is certainly available in duvets, in quilts.....far less so in coverlets.

I think it is quite unrealistic to expect something that is basically acting as a bedspread from Mary Tyler Moore and 1962, to look like a luscious bed made up at the Ralph Lauren store on Madison, or even a dive right in variety at your local Pottery Barn.

Bedding has become quite PLAIN - unless you delve into duvet covers, a quilt, or a comforter.

In other words? In an imperfect world, you are unlikely to find this particular "miracle" item ready to go, in quality, at a "price".

Last? Upholstery manufacturers consider any fabric with a double rub count of 15,000 to be heavy duty, and suitable for EVERY SINGLE day use. By definition , a search for something in the 250,000 category, will indeed be.........p.l.a.i.n.: )

It is true as well that you can have anything you want, as long as you are willing to pay for it. You love men's suiting looks? By definition those will exist most in wool fabrics, or a cotton duvet, or a comforter, or WOOL .............: ( and then require custom labor. Might be time to adjust to the market, and adjust the look.

I haven't ever figured out the Crypton fabric scene...it seems to be made by many different companies. I had my sectional recovered in a beautiful subtle herringbone, Crypton, from Greenhouse fabrics. It is made in the USA (not all their Crypton fabrics are). The fabric is very soft and you would never know it is performance fabric. Mine is 82.32% Rayon, 16.02% Polyester, 1.66% Nylon. It is totally bombproof. Water clean up 102,000 abrasions. Some of their fabrics are solvent clean. I love the water clean. Anything that gets on it, just wipes away. This is my fabric; you can hover and get an enlarged look at the pattern. Not suggesting this pattern, but they have LOTS of patterns in Crypton.

We're currently using a Room and Board coverlet/blanket I got on sale 8 years ago. I love the weight, the hand, the drape, it is high quality, and I even like the color. However, I think the color doesn't do much in the room. Plus, we are really leaning towards a neutral linen look fabric for the chaise and gold fabric for the wingback.

This three fabrics are all too one note together, but is there a clever way to make them work?Would contrasting pillows, a throw at the foot of the bed, and contrasting piping on the wing back bring all of these mustard neutrals to life enough in the space? Or should I continue my coverlet quest?

I do like these neutral crypton fabrics for the chaise and wingback because I could move the furniture into other rooms in our home and they would look good anywhere and as @Olychick mentioned, they are freaking heavy duty and clean well. Yes please! I don't care what pros say about 15,000 rubs being sufficient for everyday use. My husband and guests are not typical everyday people. They wear things hard and I don't want to police them.
