Exterior Siding Colors - Help!

Putting on an addition to the side of the house (where the current siding is in picture). Would like to use Hardie for many reasons and will be keeping window trim Sandtone as it is in existing windows (looks pinkish here, but it's more taupe). Thoughts on colors? The front of the house is stone and isn't changing, the new addition needs to compliment the brick - so we have a lot going on!

Addition design also posted for clarity.

Thank you!!

Depending on if you want to stay light or go darker, black is very popular nowadays! Here's a photo I found online that has a similar brick colour to yours, and they kept their taupe coloured windows and added black to their garage/door/roof.

That is ahuge addition and IMO you need some of the matching brick for a bit on the addition . I love this look with brick but really dsilike additions that look nothing like the original house and really not all the gables and weird roof lines either .. I would start by matching all the windows in style . IMO an addition should alsways look like it was part of the original house and a good architect does that .

Hi all - thanks for the feedback. The addition is a two story add, kitchen with bedroom above and a one story extension off the kitchen that is a breakfast nook area. Patricia, the picture you posted is one I noted several times in my research, but the green doesn't work with our brick tone or front of house stone. Generally, our architect has not given us color suggestions, only window selections. We wanted to add casements, so while we have double hung in certain areas, we are adding casements in the kitchen and nook area. Many homes in our neighborhood have done this style addition - see the attached pic. Matching the brick is an tough art and the expense is mighty.

Bradburn - I do like dark actually, was thinking Timber Bark but not sure how that would look with the taupe windows? Don't want the house windows to pop too much. I would love to use black on my sliders in the back.

Sandstone was a bad decision for the windows & now you will be chained to that bad decision forever more. That's the finish you need to fix.

Beverly, I disagree. I think the Sandtone window color is nice and very elegant actually. I was wondering if anyone had thoughts on the following colors for our trim and siding.

The second photo ^^ is timber bark or monterey taupe for the siding, I'm leaning towards the timber bark. Thoughts? Ignore the first photo, those trim options are the magnolia selection from Hardie, and too expensive to use. I'm not sure how to delete that photo!

By looking at the Hardie website, Timber Bark does look a little green, but that could just be the photo provided. It may work with the Sandstone, but might clash with the red brick. I would suggest getting a few sample pieces and setting them up in a spot where the sunlight direction changes the most throughout the day, and see how you feel!

By the way, this is the front of our house. I'm asking for help with the siding that will be on the driveway side of the house, not visible too much from the street. From having the timber bark outside with the current Sandtone siding, it looks like it works.

Not trying to be contrarian, but I don’t think your current trim really goes with the stone….now is a good time to repaint. I don’t think a slightly greenish tone is bad at all….I like both the colors in your second sample photo.

After studying it further I’m seeing a lot of green in your roof. There is a clash with roof and existing siding / window color. Hmmmm scratch my comment about matching the existing window color. Whatever you do it’s important to see the relationship of colors to the roof too - I’d treat the brick as a neutral (ignore it) but be every careful about studying the color options with stone facade (as that will create some unity to the home) AND the roof. This is a challenge.

Your house is fabulous...English country feel. I found this photo and it appears the windows may be close to the same color as what you have.

November Rain has two ID's, but it is an off-white. Looks very close to the photo off-white. That's my suggestion for siding and trim. If you need another color for the door, Sussex Green would be my choice.

The back of the house is very different from the front. I’m going to throw out a completely different suggestion. Feel free to reject it as it represents a lot more work.

The front of your house is beyond adorable. It has a wonderful English Cottage vibe. The brick and siding on the back are completely different. I suggest considering doing a Romabio color wash on the brick so the siding, brick and front are more in cohesion. Looking at the Sussex Green suggested by @elcieg, that color will make the entire structure more cohesive. You could have that color on the back, making the siding and brick the same, and use Sussex on front for your trim and door.

I like Red Ryder’s idea! But no matter what, I do think it would be a mistake to match the current window trim color….I think you’ll come to regret it.

Agree with painting the Hardie board and not going prefinished (if it was a new build prefinished could be great) you have a lot you’re trying to bring together and the siding color needs to be exactly right -

FWIW we have lots of stone and brick homes in our neighborhoods with additions, SW Tony Taupe is used a lot on siding

Hey everyone! Thank you for all the amazing comments and feedback. The current siding matches the window color - you can see it in one of the photos i posted at the top. i really like that color combo and you all may be right, just continue with what i already know works. That was one of our thoughts, i just though prefinished would last longer and a designer friend asvised to use factory finished when possible.

That said, it would make things a lot simpler to just stick with the color that works. Then, i also feel good about the patio doors being black, front door and side door can all stay black too.

Will look at Tony Taupe too!!

i love the idea of painting the brick - but i think thats just too much at this time. We want to make the exterior cohesive, but the majority of effort and $$ is going to the interior.

If you wait too long to paint the brick, the sun will have faded the Hardiboard color, making color matching a little harder. Love the front - especially if stone and not facade veneer - not so wild about keeping the red brick on a stone house.

I’m not suggesting that you paint the brick. I’m suggesting a lime wash called Romabio that can be colored to work with whatever you already have. Paint is not good for your brick.

I like the color you’re already working with. And the window sashes.

I used Monterey Taupe on my current home. I think it leans more to a soft green than a taupe color. It works well with my black roof, metal railings and outside lights. I think both colors would work with your window trim. I would get a sample of each and look at them against the brick and see which one neutralizes the orange in your brick.

The comment with the 2 samples you have against your window, may be mislabeled. The one you are calling Timber Bark looks like my siding which is Monterey Taupe. The top one looks more minty on my monitor. Timber Bark is a much deeper color on James Hardie's website.

Hi Love2browse, ignore the first photo samples. The second photo of the samples is definitely Timber Bark (the left sample) and the right is Monterey Taupe. The MT does skew a bit mint here in my photo too. That one won't work for this house, I would have thought it might before holding it up against the current trim. Timber Bark, looks to pull towards grey or brown depending on the trim and other color influences: all examples of timber bark here:

I love TB, but I'm thinking we should try to match the color based on all the feedback here, and how many elements I have to pull together - thinking just staying with what works is the way to go.
