Portico and Front Door Advice

How would you design a portico for my front door? We need a portico due to heavy rain which is a common occurrence. We will change out the front door. I need ideas for that too. We’d like a front door with 1/4 glass but are stuck on whether to get a painted or stained door. Siding on the left and right side of house is Hardie Boothbay Blue. Stone is original to the home which is 80 years old. Picture of front door taken in the morning, hence shadows. The stone steps are a semi circle shape as pictured. Hard to take a picture due to the sun.

As much as possible IMO the portico should look the same as the porch area with columns and the same type of roof Which pic is the right one for stone color? In the 1st it looks gray and in the 2nd not at ll The blue siding makes sense if it is gray but IMO not if it is yellow toned

Those half-circle steps don't work for your home now. I would create a larger stoop

I can see why Beverly posted pictures of flat roofed porticos, but I don't see why you couldn't have a small peak as well. Your house looks like houses in the Philly suburbs. Plenty of them have peaked roofs over the front door. I'm actually surprised your house doesn't have one already. The current stoop is probably not deep enough for a nice portico and you have to be able to set footers for the posts, so that will probably have to be redone as part of this project. The first picture I'm posting has double pillars like your side porch has. You could do without the dentil molding under the roofline.

Choose a front door and see what the manufacturer's color options are. Factory finishes are best for longevity. Since you have blue siding, look at blues for the front door. I used to have a stone front center hall colonial. The previous owners had painted the front door a dark purple which looked surprisingly good. It just wasn't my taste. It was dark green while we lived there and when we sold the house the buyers painted it red. You don't need the shutters on the triple window to the left of the door. You might think about painting the other shutters when you change the door.

You could do a peaked roof portico or a slanted roof (to match the other slanted roofs on the front of your house). You'd need to re-do the front steps and landing, etc., as others have mentioned. The only problem I see is that the door is not centered -- there is only a small sliver of stone at the right side and a more generous stone area at left. That would make a peaked portico difficult to design, it seems to me, because the facade around the door is not symmetrical. A slanted roof should work and would look good.
