--Scoot your sofa a little closer into the room. At some point, you might want to put some live plants on a narrow sofa table underneath the far window behind the sofa since you have light coming in from both sides.

--Invest in a buffet height console cabinet or table and place your TV above it.

--Everything should be laid out in a cozier, conversational arrangement.Move your two side chairs to face the sofa. This will also create a walkway through the room and will make it feel airier and less narrow. With the TV higher, you should be able to watch TV above the chairs.

--An alternative arrangement, though I don't know if you have the space is to float the sofa to face the fireplace so there's walking space behind it. Then watch TV from your two chairs to face the TV. I think my first suggestion is better. Try it now. The real problem is your TV is too low, so you need a wide piece or bookshelves across the TV wall.

I would get a larger rug, 2 sofas (but not large puffy ones) put one where yours is now and one where the chairs are. No love seat because 2 people will never sit that close together. A more cabinet like console for TV make sure it's wider than the one there now. 3/4 the width of that wall and then a larger TV. A swivel chair where the kids table is now and put that table in the front windows behind the sofa.

Something is just not right with that fireplace. i think it's the surround. It is too skimpy to support the fireplace box.

be moving our bigger tv into this room once we have the mount.

I agree, the fireplace is too narrow. Not sure what to do there. Also considering, depending on how difficult it is, removing some stone and lowering the mantle, it feels like an awkward height.

I would mount the tv on the wall where you have it now and choose an accent color to paint that wall to get some color in there. I would move the couch up closer to the tv and paint the coffee table the accent color you painted the wall. I would also look for an area rug with more color in it. You could get a nice throw for the couch and some accent pillows for the couch. I would look for some nice wall hangings to further pull it together. Maybe hang some wicker baskets on the walls in a large cluster arrangement. You could get an aquarium for this room with some bright tropical fish or add some large plants. There are many nice ones at Home Depot.

How you set up this room depends on how you will use it, not on the the rules of furniture configurations alone. First figure out how many people will ever sit in this room at the same time - do you entertain and how often and do people congregate in the kitchen or will they sit in here? And, how many people sit in here on a daily basis and watch TV or do other things?

I'd get great furniture, a good layout, and decorative elements in place. Then see if the fireplace still bothers you. You might not notice it as much and save yourself a major headache of trying to redo the stone or some other kind of surround.

You might want to fine-tune the position of your furnishings in the room.
