Electric forced air hvac system

Turned then heat on for the first time before bed a few nights ago and heat started right up. Woke up the next morning and my heat would start and run for a minute or so a couple times blowing cold air then shut off. The unit is 8 years old and the Nest thermostat is 6-7 years okd and we’ve never had an issue with either one. I had a Nest thermostat that had an error code e102. I trouble shooted every fix i could find but it would still throw the code and say overcurrent on w1 wire. I read that some people would replace the thermostat with the old one and everything worked fine and said it was the Nest thermostat. An hvac tech would say its Nest and Nest would say no its the system and a technician is required.

I went ahead and bought a Honeywell thermostat after research. Well hooked it up, went through setup and registered device. A/C works as it should just like with the Nest thermostat but when setting to heat, it clicks, i assume when it tries to start the heat, then screen goes black, then reboots itself. I’m at a loss where to look next before calling someone out. Any help i could get would be appreciated. I have a 5 wire system. Rh, W1, G, Y1, C

Check voltages between "Rh" and "W1", "G", and "Y1". They should all read approx 24vac. (Don't let "C" & "Rh" touch as it will blow a fuse.)

It may not be the Nest. We have a heat pump and a Nest. The Nest would throw a code when auxiliary heat would come on and then cold air would come out of the vents. Heat wouldn't work. When looking up one of the codes it said it was something to do with the AC which made no sense. The codes weren't always the same. We thought for sure it was something with the Nest. We had our biannual checkup and the tech said the heat pump looked fine. He changed one of the wires on the Nest. It did not fix anything. We had the owner of the HVAC company out and the issue was with the auxillary contacter on the air handler. Nothing to do with the Nest.

A problem with the furnace would explain why neither thermostat worked and confirm the troubleshooting document's suggestion of "system" problems. Contactors are relays and, fortunately, are cheap.

Any time there is a nest that is controlling the system it will always be suspect as the problem.

BUT: Just because a nest is there doesn't mean you don't check and find the actual problem. But that requires more farting around and people are lazy.

If your HVAC service provider isn't doing this, they aren't really an HVAC service provider they are glorified parts changers.
