Layout and design help!

We bought an apartment+shop. The apartment is very small, which is ok, we will only be living there part time. However the tv living room area seems cramped. I'm out of ideas on rearranging. Also the walls are yellow and the rig doesn't match the rest of the place. I'm thinking gold/brown, black or dark green for a rug. Hubby loves green. Should we change the wall color? I moved that little cabinet out of there so there is an empty strip in front of the black chair now. Not sure I can do much to improve the space, it's so small!

How many people will typically use this living room? Do you need to seat that many? Could you get away with just the sofa and no chairs?

There are six of us total and we also do movie nights with family or friends semi regularly. It does get cramped.

Sage green looks nice with oak cabinets. BM October Mist is nice. Then get 1 long sofa instead of 3 pieces of furniture. Not overstuffed furniture. Sisal rug (ballarddesigns.com)

Do you need to have all the chairs lined up to face the TV? How many people will typically sit and watch TV when you entertain? I assume some will be in the kitchen looking toward the TV.

How about mounting the TV on the wall? You mention everything _except_ changing out the furniture. The room does just seem cramped, it is cramped because there is too much furniture and it is all too big. And even if the furniture were smaller, six people in that room is a challenge.

If you want a new rug, then get it first, then decide on the wall color. WIth the right shade of green, and perhaps yellow mixed in, you might be able to keep the walls yellow.

Would a narrower L shaped couch work better? The six of us are- myself, hubby and 4 little girls under 7 years old. The girls usually take the couch while we take the two side chairs. When we have movie night the kids sit on parents laps, we also watch from the dining table and some from the kitchen.

We only can do movie nights with one other family at a time since it's so small. A couple and their kids.

I was thinking maybe a couple of kitchen stools for kitchen sitting and snacking during movie nights for a few adults. Maybe two. They could sit up against the island behind the couch when not in use.

Part of your issue might be the lighting you're using. Have you looked at LEDs? Maybe using those will allow less yellow to be in the room. We also might suggest a new rug and some small pouf or ottomans. Below are just two living room designs we have done for our clients which might help you more.
