Kitchen Facelift... need help!

last year
last modified: last year

Looking to replace my Kitchen floor and countertop, but having trouble finding a floor and countertop to go with my natural cherry cabinets and my foyer and dining room birch flooring. I like the wood planks(beveled edge) but cant seem to find a color I like. I posted a picture of my kitchen below, the walls are now BM Edgecomb grey. I like the cherry and don't want to paint it, but the Formica blue needs an update and the floor is a mess, we have tape covering the seams! It's 0ver 23 years old and I need an update. I was considering cristallo quartzite(not sure about the shininess), MSI Calacttaca Maraggio Cove(new color) and Cambria Ridgegate, but the floor is impossible to pick! Also want to add new lighting over islandand kitchen table. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thankful for this forum! And I know I need to declutter!

This is the BM Edgecomb Grey. Table needs replacing as well, actually we have replaced it, but the new one(not really new FB purchase) is not the best. It has lots of crumb catchers on top surface-too much texture!

Any suggestions?

I would post photos of the product choices that you are considering and a photo of the flooring in the foyer and dining room. I don't think wall color is an important consideration as you embark on new flooring and countertops--you can always repaint. Would refinishing the top of the dining table make it better?

I'd go with slate look vinyl square tiles. It's a good look with cherry cabs. that will give you many possible choices for a light shade to draw for the counter. Doesnt the foyer have a mat or two? Wouldnt the dining room have a rug under the table...I wouldnt consider the birch in those spots that critical.

Thanks for the input! I attached transition pictures. The dining room and foyer floors are shining finish . The flooring I was looking at(see pics below) is a matte finish....not sure if that matters?

    Coretec Manila Oak.

This not actual countertop I like; just trying to get an idea of how white base would look and rearranging furniture!

Is it possible to include the foyer and kitchen with new flooring, and any other spaces that are visible from entryway? It would be less choppy that way.

I don't think any of your wood flooring choices will tie in well with your existing birch floors. That is the reason why you are having a difficult time choosing because none of your choices are working well with the transitions. It would really elevate your home if you replaced all the flooring in the adjoining rooms with one wood flooring type. Otherwise, tiling your kitchen may be your best option. Make sure your floor doesn't flex if you decide to tile.

No to any wood-look flooring because any of your choices diminish the quality of your original floors. Stone-look tile seems like a good choice to me.

Flooring of any type is a big commitment of dollars and time. With all the room interfaces, your best bet is to replace all flooring at the same time. Otherwise, do a porcelain stone look of your choice. Your existing flooring in kitchen looks pretty old so plan on needing flooring repairs or replacement in your budgeting too. It will be great if you can do uniform flooring.

Can't get better half onboard with replacement of existing hardwood...and not sure I want birch all over. All in all, I agree all downstairs should be same. If I could get him onboard, what color would you all suggest for the floor against the natural Cherry Cabinets?

  • last year

If you replace all of it, a couple of the wood choices, you showed above would work. (lighter colors). None of them go with the existing birch, so if you decide on wood, just replace all the birch too. If you dont replace the birch, then go with either a vinyl tile, or a regular type tile in the kitchen.

Like building a home, best to get right the first time and not shortchange on important stuff you’ll regret later. If you plan to be there for next 10 yrs+ then good investment now. You should look at samples you love, that also compliment with kitchen cabinets. I would look at light to mid tone warm shades.

I agree with all same flooring suggestions.

What is the flooring in the living room?

If you install matching birch wood flooring in the kitchen, can you have the floors refinished so you can restain them all with a different color, if that’s what you want?

Design Fan jackowskib cat_ky Flo Mangan I have carpet in living room, but was considering replacing that with the vinyl we install in kitchen. So the foyer and dining room would be birch and the other floors would be same- manila oak coretec is what I like. I ordered a box to get and idea of how it would look, it is similar in tone to the birch, but not shiny and planks are wider-7" birch planks are shiny and 3 3/4(? something like that).

Her is manila oak with cherry cabinets in another persons home. I think it looks nice and not too matchy....thoughts? And second picture is visualization of my kitchen. With continuing the MO through other 2 rooms do you think it will be more flowing? I am thinking the dining room and foyer have rugs that hide most of the wood and dining room is not in direct site line of entry into house, only foyer and that area is mostly covered by a runner? Thoughts on that theory?

    My kitchen with Manila Oak

    Transition from foyer

Transition from kitchen to family room if we extend MO to other rooms! Please over look clutter!!!

And if I could talk better 1/2 into laying it over the birch, it would all match! Which I do agree is the right choice, but it doesn't look like I can convert better 1/2- ugh!

Have to agree, the birch is the better floor than any of the samples that you have shared. Try some samples of a slate style as others have suggested. Sometimes just putting a sample which is completely opposite to your initial choices will throw up a pleasant surprise.

  • last year

Honestly, while the Manila Oak is quite nice, I would be so bothered by the difference of the two different floors that are obviously not the same. In this case trying to match floors and they just don't. In times like this when hubby and I do not agree, I resort to doing nothing. Meaning, I continue to save $$ until the job can be done completely. Good luck!!

Sorry if I missed it above but why don’t you want to extend the birch into the kitchen? Budget reasons?
