most outdoor plants do not winter over well as houseplants...

zone appropriate plants should not need coddling.. based on age.. they either are.. or they arent ..

Partially consumed leaves on a deciduous tree or shrub at the end of November is not an issue for concern. The plant is entering dormancy and the remaining leaves - or parts of them - will drop off in a week or two. But it is something to keep an eye on next season. It is also very likely the katydid you saw was responsible for the leaf damage.

Depending on your location, maintaining a containerized shrub outside over winter can be risky but it is equally risky to hold one over indoors. Garden shrubs are not houseplants :-) You can keep somewhere that stays cold but doesn't freeze (a shed, unheated garage, etc.) but the safest method is to dig a hole and sink the pot into the ground. The surrounding soil mass will insulate it until it is time to replant.

Thanks everyone. I’m in Richmond, VA. The reason that they are on my porch in containers is that I planted them in my yard, then decided to move them to a different place. I re-tilled and composted the soil in that area. So, that’s why they’ve been taken out. My hope is to rehab them until they become big and healthy enough to plant. I will put them in the garage over the winter for insulation. Thanks all!
