need help with kids room

last year

This is a kids room at a confidential shelter for women and children. It needs a makeover really bad. I need help in finding the right colors and making it a play room for kids who stay here

Maybe a neutral color with a wall mural

Hi Mayra. I’m afraid I’m no help, but can you tell us how you want the room to function? Toys? Books? Crafts? Any special needs? Please post more of your needs and I hope some pros here will help you.

Walls in something green/yellow which will add a nice bright vibe. Funky, fun art all over the walls. Hang their own designs. Have rools of paper and crayons. Lots of cushions on the floor for some relaxing. Lots and lots of books for all ages. Add in a grown up to read to the children.

Two more things..low table for snack time and some peaceful background music that you can find on Utube.

Do something with that ceiling light. Replace with something more fun and install a dimmer. This ceiling light is $71.00 at Walmart.

The closet area( with all the toilet paper) could have shelving for toys and maybe a t v set to appropriate stations.

An idea of your budget and a floor plan showing dimensions with doors, windows, closet marked would help people offer more specific ideas. Paint in a light, bright color - or even white - that is scrubbable and easily touched up.

Prints or murals on the walls that are cheerful - four seasons, careers, zoo. Zazzle has a series of Where's Waldo posters that could provide both color and engagement if hung at kids' eye level - deep sea divers, beach, winter....

Kids love chalk board walls or dry erase boards, but they get messy to clean up.

Consider looking for a "buy nothing" group on Facebook or Nextdoor, in an area near a willing staff member's home rather than the shelter to preserve the confidential location. My daughter has had remarkable luck finding wood furniture and great play items for her 4 kids that way. You can ask if anyone can fill a specific need (play kitchen, bookcases, etc), or just monitor the site for what is offered.

If you're unable to find donations for your new Kid's Playroom, I'm suggesting a few inexpensive items from Ikea and Amazon.

I suggest you paint the room in a warm white (walls & woodwork the same colour, walls in Eggshell finish, woodwork in Semi-gloss or Satin) so that the toys and furniture are the featured colour accents in the room.

    Good luck with your project!

I believe you mean the "right" colors to go with the turquoise of the walls? Kids don't care, they just want to play.

Get a lot of the floor covered in play mat_inexpensive on Amazon!

Buy large poster boards, let kids make art and hang it up! Get a handy man to shelve the closet. Raise the blind and let the light in!

I assume there are kids of ALL ages, so think bright, cheerful and pretend you ARE a kid.

Get rid of the cart, and whatever is on it. : )

I agree the closet needs shelving to hold books at different heights maybe some toys on the shelves the cart gone open the blind and my kids loved a huge blackboard on one wall and chalk they used that more than toys sometimes even to write things when they were mad at me. A big stack of paper a small desk and cahir lots of crayons and a nice soft mat for floor sitting . I like the wall color For me the ony things stored in there should be stuff for the kids and I hate to say but a wall mounted TV with some cushions to sit on. I actually think too much color is not a good plan for kids understress color can be a calming influence

The colors/feel are endless and if you search day care rooms, there are all kinds of ideas from both a visual perspective and a practical sense. Consider their needs and try in some way to address the different range of ages.

Since there seemed to be a few electrical paraphernalia that would need to be removed, and based on what you wrote above, I thought you wanted to paint the walls. However, here is the look with the existing colour, and I've also included some suggestions made by others...
