Beige/tan paint for accent wall

last year

Hi,

We recently purchased a leather sofa and chair in a shade called something "stone" but when it came it is a lot greener than we thought. We can live with that but the paint on the wall behind the sofa is agreeable gray which looks very green with the sofa. I am thinking we can paint that wall a different color that won't fight with the sofa. Maybe a beige but not with green undertones. Ideas? Thanks!

Do you want your sofa to look more neutral or more green? On my moniter your walls don't appear green but if you want your sofa to look more neutral your walls need some green and if you want your Sofa to appear green then have walls with no green in them.

I see what you mean. Turn on ALL the lights and take more pics. Go to the paint store and get a few dozen paint chips, and put them on the sofa to see which ones you think work best. Maybe use a color from the rug. It’s a nice room, just needs a tiny tweak.🙂

I don't think that wall lends itself to being an accent wall. I would hang a large piece of art there.

Agreed, not a fan of accent walls and don't think that wall in particular would make sense to have as an accent wall. Try finding the right piece of art to hang and maybe different sofa pillows that will add a more saturated color for the eye to look at.

Is that the only space for the sofa ? IMO no accent wall to draw attention to the odd heights behind it. I agree art is a must anywhy so get something large and with colors you like much better than some random accent wall.

I'd return it. Not the best looking sofa , sorry to say a bit lumpy appearing?. Actually, the rug appears even less agreeable than the wall color.

As other posters have said - that wall might not make a good accent wall.

Sofa takes on a greenish hue partly because of the deep winne color of the recliner and ottoman. If you are keeping the red in the room, select a different color of sofa, maybe even a navy leather.

Is that matching chair perpendicular to the sofa? If, return that as well and start over (groan).

I don’t think painting that wall another color will make the couch feel any different, as the natural light in the room is probably the cause. As well, the wall is really not suited to be an accent wall.

It‘s an unexpected surprise, but I‘m sure it will grow on you and suggest replacing the rug for a softer look, as the couch is not a terrible color. Consider how you accessorize as well.

Looks like the couch is not centered/half wall is not great….can couch be moved down, even if it means removing the side table on right (add a floor lamp instead), so art can be added to make it feel more grounded/balanced. Better yet, can couch go on another wall?

Your items appear green because of all the reddish toned items you have placed next to them.

I'd exchange the sofa if possible. The colors not working in the room.

I'm sorry your new sofa color is a disappointment. If returning it is not an option, you can make the color combo look more intentional by adding throw pillows that have the colors of the sofa and the chairs, it will help the eye tie everything together. You can also do the same with a new rug.

I agree with the other advice that an accent wall is not going to help.

Can you show more of the room (all sides) and how it relates to adjoining rooms? It’s hard to get an idea of context with just this one photo.

I’m in the ’no accent wall’ camp no matter what, but it would still help to see more views of the room.

Can the chair/ottoman go somewhere else and a different chair put in its place? Would you consider a different rug? Will there be art on the sofa wall?

Thank you all for comments. Here are more photos. The other issue is that this wall does not line up to the fireplace wall across the room. We had to decide whether to center the sofa on the wall or facing fireplace. Sofa facing fireplace made more sense to us.

I'm not returning the sofa and we actually really like it. I don't necessarily want it to be less green looking (although more of a neutral would be better) but I feel like the wall/sofa color combo is not good. The entire downstairs is painted agreeable gray except for an accent wall around the fireplace. All was newly painted before we moved in 2 yrs ago.

As you can see there is no other wall for the couch to be on.

I would love to have a big piece of art on the wall but again, do we center where the sofa is or where the wall center is?? I've thought of putting some piece of tall furniture to the right of the sofa but I don't the look of lined up furniture. Also there are already so many built in shelves in the room I don't want to add another shelving unit.

Any area rug suggestions are welcome too. I'd like to replace this but just looking at them online takes me down a rabbit hole :)

    I so appreciate any help

Do you have a moment to take measurements of those rooms and make a drawing? Especially showing the length of the full wall the half wall, the area around those lovely windows and the bookcase as well as the fireplace? I think another layout is in your future. Love your sewing cabinet!

I would center the sofa on the wall, and find something else (doesnt have to be shelves) to put on the other end. A really nice piece of art, centered above the sofa. Some pillows to match better in the room. The ones you have are nice, but, dont seem to go with anything else, in the room. A new rug too.

Any chance you could take a closeup of the sofa fabric?

In the meantime, my suggestion would be to find a cool, very light, gray paint and not do a beige.

Then add a sage green throw and pillows on the sofa. The gray walls will help the sofa look grayer and the sage will show that the sofa is not green. For art, try a piece with highlights of green, but on a gray/white back ground.

Keep in mind that the rug, right now, is driving that bus. Run into Home Goods, or similar, and see what rug is there which is more white/gray.

The blue art work isn't helping because it is exacerbating the green undertone in the sofa fabric. So stay away from blues, pinks, purples, anything that is a warm tone.

Is the sofa directly opposite the fireplace? It looks off side in your photos.

  • last year

Yes the sofa is directly opposite the fireplace. I can work on drawings/layout tomorrow. Thanks all!

I’m always willing to make comments without measurements… I would look at pitting the back of that sofa against the wall with no tables next to either side so that you do have room to walk on the left side nearer the fireplace. And then possibly placing your other two chairs on the other side facing it. Because you don’t have a TV in there, I think you have more flexibility with your furniture arrangement. we have two recliners, facing the TV, with the sofa at a right angle to the recliners, looking at an armoire and artwork.

  • last year

I think I should’ve said the right side of the sofa against the wall that the back is currently resting on.

There is a tv in the room, it is on the right hand side of the fireplace in front of some of the built in shelves. Here are 2 photos from the previous owners I was able to find from a video online. They had the sofa centered on that wall but I think it looks really odd not centered with the fireplace. They also have no rug or art work at all so it looks very empty.

The first photo is looking from the back door/windows and the second photo is looking from nearer to the front entrance of the house.

I think the rug is throwing the room colors off. I like a green couch. I was thinking of getting one myself. I am reading some great advice. I’m sure you will end up with a great room.

cebehatz , what would you recommend for rug pattern? I've been looking at geometric gray/white but just not finding anything I like very much.

  • last year

Sorry but I’m not a good one to recommend too many things on decorating. I know what I like and what I don’t like when I see it and to me the rug is not right. I saw other examples that I thought added to the room better.

  • last year

I liked the last advice by partim regarding the wall picture. I don’t think it threw the room off at all.

I don't think introducing a cool gray to the room via a new rug is going to help tie the room together. There is no other gray in the space and every other decor feature in the room is warm. Cool gray is going to stick out like a sore thumb.

Your agreeable gray walls are a slightly warm greige and not a cool gray.

Picking out rugs online can be intimidating. Many online rug stores have free shipping and returns but wrapping and lugging a large rug to the UPS store is not fun. One hint is that if you see something you like, order the smallest size available. Then you can see the colors and texture in your space and you won't have the return worries.

Many rug sites have features where you can upload a photo of your room and the site will insert a rug in your space. That can be very helpful.

Cool or neutral grays will not look good in your room. Stick to warm tones. Your rug looks good.

  • last year

Have you ever thought about pushing all the furniture closer to the opposite wall and making a walkway behind the couch?

  • last year

Partim , I do like your idea. The wide art work looks good. Cebehatz , the room isn't wide enough to pull the sofa further to the other side.

Just throwing out ideas here, but my sister had the same fireplace vs TV dilemma in both her living room and family room. She removed both fireplaces. She sold the house last year and not one person asked about a fireplace. We are in Toronto.

Another TV option is to put it on a pulldown mount over the fireplace. The new looks-like-art TVs are nicer.
