Plug in but I believe its the same as mine which had an option to hardwire. Also, you can get Hue color changing LED strip lights and that is plug-in. It bothers me that your electrician pitched you under counter lighting that was expensive enough that you considered going without. Maybe 5 years ago you would be paying maybe $500+ or more but now if you use something like Costco's set then its under $100 for hardwired fixtures.

The one in the picture is plugged into the outlet. You can see the cord coming off the near end, running back to the wall, along the edge of the cabinet and down to its plug.

It says direct plug in... yes, mine had an option to hardwire which is what I did.

We have no walls now but the labor price for rough in and trim still seems high even at $50 per light x 5.

What market are you in? $50 per light just for labor would see like a good deal to me.

Oh no that’s the material. Quoted is $1350 so over $1k in labor seems high but I could be wrong. In the Midwest.

Electrical labor is crazy expensive. I asked contractors already on site to replace a hanging ceiling fixture - single bulb with shade. It took 20 minutes, mostly to get the correct height. Charge was $200, plus contractor's 20%.

When questioned, the electrician said he uses software and that is the charge for hanging a chandelier! The workers were great, but the boss is an SOB. But good luck finding one who will even do residential work.

You will love the under counter lights, and amortized over time, the price will be worth it.

Yeah, where I am an electrician isn't walking in to change a switch for less than $500. But you will LOVE under counter lights. One of those things that don't seem important at all until you have it, and then you can't believe what a difference it makes. I wouldn't skimp on the shelf area, that would just make that stretch of countertop less useable.
