Tile, LVT or wood a senior dog is going to slide on smooth treads. Carpet or ribbed vinyl treads are the only things that will allow a senior dog to safely get up and down the stairs.

My husband doesn’t think we should design around our senior dog since she’s not doing well on carpet stairs so it’s probably not long before she won’t do stairs. Fair enough. Would be nice if there were 3M type adhesive treads that could be removed later. Will someone please invent these? 😊

There are many carpet treads for stairs that are removable, these do not use adhesive tape but they will stay put because of the rubber backing; they will not damage the floor when removing them, and they are washable.

Kathyb have you tried these ‘nonslip’ treads? I’m curious if they actually stay in place or look askew as pets and humans walk on them?

I have them and they work great, they do not move around at all. The exact ones I have are no longer available, but the latex back looks the same as the one I linked above. I would double check the reviews for extra reassurance. You can also do a search for 'non slip carpet treads' and you will get lots of options.

For my senior dog I cut up a 2 x 3 door mat into treads and attached them to the wood stairs with double sided rug tape. He weighed about 50 lbs so the treads took some pressure and held very well for the last four years of his life. The treads also create a nice edge break for my friend with low vision who often visits so I have kept them now five years later. The double sided tape holds well for vacuuming and can be removed and replaced if necessary.

Go to your local Home Depot or Lowes and wander the utility rug area for ideas.

This is the actual one I used. HD used to carry it in that size at a much lower price.They still have the 3 x 5 for a good price. You'd have to do more cutting than split it in half but get a good utility knife and ruler and have at it. Not fancy but extremely functional. I like splitting the 2 x 3 size as it leaves a finished edge on the exposed edges and the cut edge goes against the riser. I'm sure you'll be able to find something in your area that works. Splitting the 2 x 3 leaves a little waste but only enough to make it fit the tread.

Here's mine. Looks like someone needs to clean their stair risers. 😮

My husband is leaglly blind and has real difficulty with lack of contrast. We did our basement stairs in the same LVP as our basement floor but I ised a vinyl nosinf that is riibed and glllued down My husband fins id good, our dog too and it was very affordable and has stood up to a ton of traffic for the past 3 yrs. As for tile that looks like the one you show thatt will be trickier but check out Manninton LVT choices.
