Looking for kitchen design ideas

We’ve started the design process to remodel our kitchen and I don’t love the initial design. Looking for thoughts/ideas how to handle the corner where the shelving is shown and any other configuration ideas. The shelves just look off to me but I’m not sure of a better solution.

The windows currently aren’t there, so there’s flexibility with their placement (they’re not centered on the wall as shown), and everything else along that wall.

The island will have a pull out trash can but that can be on either the left or right of the island.

Thanks so much!

I dont like the shelves either. is there a pantry? those two uppers are not enough space for everyday dishes, glasses, etc. plus canned goods, cereals, spices, soup, packaged foods.

It seems like you already have this discussion going on another thread. https://www.houzz.com/discussions/6424394/how-to-handle-a-corner

It gets too confusing to have two of them going.

@Kendrah -that question was more about the placement of an appliance garage, which I feel good about now. I wasn't sure the best way to redirect the question back to the corner now that I've solved for the appliance issue, so I started a new thread with the specific question to that wall.

@auntthelma - there will be more storage (pantry, etc) on another wall, so I don't really need the storage, although it's always nice to have a lot of storage.

I would do no shelves or turn the corner with the cabs. the shelves to corner look pretty silly. you can just take dead end cabs on that wall if you want it open. i would also put dw to left of sink so its not in prep area.

@color zen - the picture is just casting a shadow. The island will be white oak and the cabinets will be white.

    dont you need oven ?

(there's another wall with fridge, oven, and many pantries)

I would move the dishwasher to the other side of the sink, right now when you open the dishwasher door it will get in the way of the cooktop area.

Is the fridge on the other wall? The island looks like it may be a barrier between fridge and cooking zone. If you move the fridge to the left of the sink at the end of that cabinet run all the cooking functions are clustered on one side of the island.

i know open shelves in kitchens are trendy right now but they are TOUGH to live with (i had them in a cottage kitchen years ago and had to rinse everything before using- even everyday items - the shelves got really really dusty so lots of pulling everything off and wiping them down and I am def not a clean freak) - so I think it would be tough to clean those back corners on those open shelves. If it were me, I would want a more pleasing symmetrical elevation on this side and the hood side

@la_la Girl - agreed! I just can’t figure out how to deal with that wall. The problem is there’s no real symmetrical solution that I can tell. We could move the windows a bit and maybe the sink isn’t centered under the windows. But as it stands in the drawing, there’s more space to the right of the windows than to the left.

No shelves. Just add another cabinet next to the other one to the left of the hood. Then center the windows on the remainder of the wall. And it’s essential to put the dishwasher on the other side.
