Got my seed sowing schedule done today

Had a chance to sit down this afternoon with my seeds and legal pad and jot down the schedule, the time will be here before you know it. The earliest batch starts under the lights toward the end of February, with weekly sowings all the way through May, both annuals and vegetables. I thought I was cutting down but the problem is I like a couple of this, just a few of that -- so I had a bunch of seed packets to go through, cutting down on the total number of plants, but not the number of different cultivars. It just kinda seems like a whole lotta seeds...and it is but it isn't, y'know? I just couldn't resist trialing a few different new-to-me zinnias and a new marigold, take those out of the equation and it would be 4 fewer cultivars. I do have the room out there in veggie garden to play around, so why not.

That’s great!! I need to do this as well. I have too many seeds and not enough space under my grow lights.

I have two flats of rose seeds started under lights...got that done a few days ago and have some sprouting. They'd been in the fridge for a few months, most of them. These are from my garden. Only two were up yesterday but today I'm seeing more poking up.

Have a bunch of flower seeds to start . Probably will do that in the next couple of weeks. I also have little room to set up lights so plan to try " wintersowing" some of them outside. Wouldn't hurt to try. ( zone 7a, NC)

Great job!! I’m jealous; we are planning on selling our house and moving ”up north” this spring/summer, so my usual garden planning and planting isn’t necessary this year. I will have to garden dream vicariously through all of you!

@lovemycorgi z5b SE michigan: Moving! To a larger or smaller garden? Are you bringing plants with you?

@lovemycorgi z5b SE michigan where up north are you moving? Eastern vs western NLP or U.P.? I've thought about it moving up to the western NLP but DH is adamant he wants to stay put. Then I tried to talk him into a small winter cabin somewhere between Roscommon and Gaylord so he can go up there and spend a few weeks at a time skiing when he's retired. He nixed that idea, too. Sigh...

mxk3 & mazerolm, we are looking mainly inland along the coast between Traverse City and Petoskey; we are looking for 20 acres or more (40 acres would be fantastic!). Even the Leelanau area would be great. As we’re both in our fifties, we want doctors and hospitals to be easily accessible for whatever ailments may come our way as we get older. If not for that, we might end up on 100 acres or more in the UP!!

So far I’m not looking to take any plants with me, as there is so much else that needs to done in preparation for moving. I’ll miss my gardens, but looking forward to creating new ones wherever we end up. With my luck, I’d dig up a treasured plant to take, and end up transferring creeping charlie or bindweed to my new gardens in the process!! Hubby and I are both retired now and we want to feel like we’re on vacation every day. Time for the next chapter!!!

@lovemycorgi z5b SE michigan Beautiful area up there! Very pricey, though, as you know. I think if you go more inland it's not as bad as nearer Lake Michigan or Torch Lake area. Maybe halfway between T.C. and Gaylord? But dang the Leelanau area is stunningly beautiful, maybe you'll find something there but a little farther out. I hear you about age and thinking about getting around and doctors. That is definitely something you need to think about, and as you may know there's a paucity of providers up there unless you're in the "big city" (big city - LOL!).

mxk3, so true about health providers! We’ve had the umich medical network nearby for all of our medical needs - the best of the best!! We at least want to be near a ”big city” (and yes, lol at that!) up north, so that’s Traverse City or Petoskey. We’d like to be within 30 or 45 minutes of the city, but we’ll see.

And for sure it’s very pricey up there; lots of wealthy folk in those areas and that ain’t us, ha ha!! We’re willing to put some work into whatever house we buy, it doesn’t have to be perfect; but we’re much more picky about the property itself, so I hope we can find something that checks all the boxes.

Being in one's 50's seems so young to me now!

"Being in one's 50's seems so young to me now! "

    LOL! (but not really...)

I'm 72. 50's really does seem young to me..like the start of middle age maybe. I think of old as starting at around 70. Middle old is about 80. Old old is 90. ( to me) I have never even felt any older until about five years ago. Now I am a bit creakier , slower to get up, not as strong but fairly active and I walk a mile several times a week. My mother was very zippy at age 88. She did her exercise pretty much every day.

I'm about 8-10 weeks away from planting, so I'm well past planning it out. Cold weather plants can go out late March, and the warm weather loving stuff mid April. I'm really ready. Though, I managed to kill the last of my Italian White seedlings, and no more seeds. So I guess I'll have to get more. Wonder how many other seeds I'll just "have to have"? Not sure I can live without Italian white, so I'll surely try not to buy anymore. I'm getting ready to pot up a whole bunch.

Blimey, how organised are both of you (msk and Rob). Outstanding! I am afraid I have been quite woefully overwhelmed - I go to my seed boxes with every intention of getting a heap of stuff underway...but there are so many, Plus I have had the usual labelling fiasco and cannot remember what I sowed last year. A delivery of seeds from the Hardy Plant Society (40 varieties) has tipped me over the edge. Still taking refuge in the seasonal textile projects (sewing, spinning, dyeing, knitting).

If I don't write down a schedule with dates, I will forget to do it.
