Just buy an LED tape light, attach it to a wall, cabinet, shelf or other object and let them play with the colors. Home Depot has an 8' kit for $30. Or if one of them has a phone, buy a $10 color-changing lightbulb and put it in a lamp.

I figure this might can be a normal warm white and I was planning on removing the ceiling fans with these so it looks like a normal room light but you can change colors. The take steps appear tacky as this would be permanent. I don't want to have still lights and wires. This would be hard wired.

Ceiling fans make a room more comfortable for occupants and reduce electricity costs by allowing you to set a higher room temperature. It makes no sense to remove them. Just use some floor lamps, table/desk lamps, or sconces. IKEA has lots of bedroom lights including some kids lights your children might like. If you buy lights with replaceable bulbs, you can put $10 color-changing lightbulbs in them.
