Certainly loblolly pine will be well suited to NC. I don't know of any experiences, but Silvics manual says (assuming the grafting is done on loblolly rootstock):

Pinus taeda L

.Grafting is the most common method of vegetative propagation

used to produce genetically uniform trees, especially in seed

orchards. Grafting success is usually high but varies with scion

material because problems may develop from incompatibility of

scion and root stock (29,37,66).

I am thinking you would have to graft between major groups(sections) of pine, but I'm not 100% sure. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pine

At any rate, good luck getting someone to do it. Although, thankfully, the 'rare conifer buying public' has reached the critical mass and concensus on grafting Firs on resistant rootstock, I haven't had much progress with other genera. Most notable Lawson Cypress, a certainly well known PNW nursery scoffed at the grafting that onto an Asian Chamaecyparis, even though the so-called 'disease resistant' Lawson Cypress are only disease resistant in the PNW, not anywhere else in the US.

At the end of the day, lazy American nurserymen would rather not graft if they don't have to, and asking them to graft onto a specific stock is even more of a chore for them! Contrast with plucky little Australia, a country with a population roughly the size of the wider NYC metro area, that has grafts of western Proteaceae routinely available at non-mail order nurseries. Or the largest rhododendron nursery in the world, Hachmann in Germany, that grafts all the plants they sell.
