Is that a wood burning FP? Are you leaving it or doing electric or gas insert? I think the bottom arched opening is for firewood. The top opening?? is the top inside that opening the same color & finish as ceiling in room? Any electric inside of it? Would it be possible to make a false back to bring the depth down to a good shelf depth & then mount 2 narrow wooden shelves in it for display? It’s pretty deep & my thought is the false back - a light color - would reduce the heaviness of the red brick and the 2 shelves for display would add interest & space for larger items like pottery… Or maybe only 1 shelf needed & have good height for each level for larger display items.

IMO even when you remove the mantel the TV will be too high . I need to see the whole room thid FP is only one wall. The giant hole can be covered or have shelves added for some diplay the arched opening is for wood if you have agas FP get some all matched birch logs to fill the gap. If this is awood burning FP you will have to have a mantel below the TV we need info and pics of the space post both here in comments DO NOT start another post . Is this the only space that can have a TV?

I don't see that you have room for a mantel after you hang the TV. Maybe there's a better wall for the TV.

You can purchase wood rounds on Amazon that can be attached to a wood panel to create a storage niche in the brick.

Your TV looks to be on the left side of the fireplace, and at a good height for viewing. I’d stack firewood in the arched bottom opening. Do you have a cat? If so, a cat tree that leads up to the square opening for a pet bed would be adorable.

Square hole - add two shelves, put your white baskets of stuff on them. Or other bins, or books.
