I think a bar tray would look nice there with some pretty liquor bottles and maybe a couple nice glasses and a shiny cocktail shaker.

Maybe a large piece of pottery in each?

Books , and perhaps a piece of artwork (like a sculptue of vase) for a mini library in that room..

Any of those ideas are great even just a nice picture in a nic efram in each one.

I’d fill that space with firewood even if your fireplace is gas. Before you laugh…at least it makes a bit more sense than books you’ll never read or reference that have a plastic faux plant on top of them. Otherwise use it as a minibar or store wine there beautifully. Make it a place for family photos…

Plants?

If you need lighting I’d put little lamps in the space with a family photo or piece of art on an easel. If you need storage I’d find attractive baskets that take up most of the space to put things in.
