Do I have to seal with polyurethane?

I just finished sanding and staining our kitchen table! I love it, first time ever and I think it looks great! I purchased a satin finish polyurethane to go on top but I’m sort of loving the look of the table top without it. Do I have to put polyurethane on top? Will the stain and table be ruined without some type of polyurethane over the stajn?

You need to so that it will be protected. If you like the way it looks now then go with a matt finish. There will be very little shine.

You can do linseed oil. It will probably need redoing every now and then.

You can buy a wipe on “not shiny” (low gloss) polyurethane. I have used it on many pieces of old furniture that would look ridiculous with a shiny finish.

You need to protect the wood. Don’t leave it naked.
