As long as that hood is ducted to the exterior, has enough CFM, and you USE IT, then you won't get nasty great particles on and above the cabinets. So, if venting is handled well, there's not need for tile to compensate for poor venting.

Sometimes tile can look good all the way to the ceiling, but in your kitchen it wouldn't be highlighting or "framing" anything that needs to be highlighted. You don't need to do anything at all with the space above your cabinets. Spend the money on something else.

It’s definitely not necessary. But I do think it would look nice all the way up.
