Baker Creek shipping is low or even free but they only sell heirloom seeds. I'm looking at they're catalog right now and because they're heirlooms the prices are just 2 or 3 bucks a pack.

It is indeed stunning how much most seed companies charge for shipping. We're talking about one-ounce postage stamps for 68 cents these days for a few packets, but many charge several bucks to do it. They must pay people as much to lick envelopes as they do to carefully raise plants and harvest seeds.

I know of a 100 year old hardware store that has survived the big box store takeover and has seeds from companies I've never heard of. Renne's garden, Lake valley and 2 I don't remember along with Ferry Morse, but no Burpee's. (yeah!) $1.99 to $2.19 is all the seed packs cost with the same or more seeds by weight than burpee's, but are all open pollinated seeds. I spent $35 bucks for a lot of seeds and fine without hybrids, and don't mind spreading the wealth to the underdogs.

I check Garden Watchdog for reputable mail order businesses and Baker Creek is highly rated. I bought seeds from them last month and shipping was free. A week later I ordered again, one single packet, and it it was shipped for free again. LOVE Baker Creek.

Are you looking for any types in particular? If you want something unique that you crave, you got to pay for shipping. I don't see that shipping costs are that high.

Many companies have specials at certain times. You could sign up for e-mail alerts. Johnny's is never that cheap for shipping, but then their focus is more on market growers. Burpee's seeds online are rather expensive, but their shipping is not that high. If you want lowest cost, find a local nursery that has multiple seed collections.
