TV/Shelf Redo! Please help! What ideas do you have for this unit? Can I take it to the ceiling and add lights inside the shelves? I would like to remove the molding and make it more modern.

I would do what Kendra says about lifting it and filling it so it looks built in

Id also remove the doors on either side keep it open shelving....only have the bottoms as closed cabinets

IMO you needt o decide what style you want . I dislike this type of entertainment center with shelves full of stuff that does not need display and a finite space for TV but if modern go with a really cook wall of TV storgae and small amount of display .I like this look where the TV can be huge, the storgae is there and the rest of the space can be used for art instead of a bunch of little stuff the just creates eye clutter if you really want to go modern

Have you considered removing the entire thing and wall mounting a TV with a console under it? That would give you a bigger space and the most flexibility in arranging furniture. The various moldings on the piece mean it will never look modern.

There's a disconnect--the off-center peak in the ceiling looks modern, but the entire entertainment unit is traditional (raised paneling, bilateral symmetry, crown molding).

If you want a modern look/feel, latifolia's idea of removing it and replacing it with a low console/TV would look better.

Depends on your budget. If the budge is small you should be able to "modernize" your entertainment center by removing mouldings and replacing the doors. If you have a big enough budget you can replace it altogether.

Some of us have collected items over our lifetime and like to see them displayed.

I'll show a portion of my TV/display unit with a 75" Samsung the Frame TV (with DecoTV Frame). Keep shelves shallow for an updated look. The wall unit is 10 ft tall with a simple cove molding at the top.

Here is an example where they went to the top, with a sloped ceiling.

The advantage of removing it now is you can get the wall patched and run the new flooring all the way to the wall. If, a year from now, you decide to remove it, the flooring will be a big issue.

If budget is an issue, just hang the TV on the wall. A new console can be bought as and when budget allows.

So yes, the photo above posted by chispa is a very good approximation of what your space could look like if you go to the ceiling. If you like it, and want to spend the $$ to build it, then go for it.

I would not keep the upper portion of the entertainment center.

I'd update the look by cutting the upper portion away

It will provide you with the ability to select a larger TV screen
