last year
last modified: last year

Small dining room. i’m looking for advice on what make help it look better? i am thinking of putting some sort of natural looking shades on the doors. wonder if this is a good idea? any ideas on what to do with window in between. the wall with the doors and window in between looks awkward. i’m also not sure about the art on the left wall. any help is appreciated! ideally, the room would be bigger or my table smaller (my hisband made it for me) and maybe i shpukd remove the credenza? thanks again!!!

i added a few additional ohotos of the living room.

This room is begging for light -- start simply by turning on the light you have. A chandalier would really upgrade this space.

You would be more comfortable without the sideboard. I understand it probably holds linens and dishes and is useful for serving. Is there a wall outside the dining alcove that could accommodate the sideboard?

Agree with Beverly - turn table so chairs have more room for pulling out. The chairs with backs to credenza & window wall look too tight for seating. If rotating table doesn’t work then maybe credenza needs to be moved. Is that wall long enough that it can be moved towards open end of room - away from windows? Is there enough room to fully open both doors? Especially the one at end of credenza? Perspective makes it hard to determine sizes of furniture & length of wall. A hanging chandelier light over table would be a great add.

nice room! If it were me, I would install a chandelier I loved, add pretty roman shades to the doors and windows, and remove the credenza

show the space where you are standing to take the photo.

could you put the credenza centered to divide the room?

a sofa in front of it facing into the other room?

Do you actually use those doors? The room seems pretty tight to even get to them and then open them. Whatever you are seeing through the left one is very distracting. If you don't use these doors, I would pull the table away from the outside wall and put the credenza back there partially blocking the doors. Or replace it with one that does fit between the doors.

Your husband did a nice job on the table!

It looks like it's an older home with modern furniture which gives you a lot of latitude when choosing a chandelier. Look for something round and hang it about 36" off the table top. Remove the credenza if you feel cramped after trying Beverly's suggestion about rotating the chairs. Removing it would also enable you to center the table in the room better which would look more pleasing.

I don't think you need any coverings on those doors or the window. It looks like there is a covered porch outside, so you aren't getting a lot of light coming through. Do you have privacy concerns at night in this room such that you do need window coverings?

Definitely do Beverly’s suggestion for the dining chairs. After seeing this on another post, I did it in my small dining area. What a change in ease of use and visual size.

Are you able to move the chairs some? It looks like currently one chair can't be pulled out due to the buffet. If you place the chairs at an angle then the chairs shouldn't hit any part of the buffet. Also we think you should look into a chandelier that will go well with all of the other decor you currently have.

    Thank you to everyone!

Move the credenza to the living room, replacing the smaller one there. Then your dining room will be large enough.

What about replacing the center window between the doors with a stained glass window? You can experiment with the peel & stick varieties available on Amazon, before investing in the real thing.

The credenza from tge dinjng room is way too long for the space we currently have tge stereo. it woukd work behind the couch, but adds more furniture to our living room that has quite a few large pieces

I’d try to just have the table & chairs, unless I’m misunderstanding the size of the room. They’re quite nice & would be the “stars “ & have breathing room— the dining area would be more relaxed & inviting .

Noodle on where the credenza might work. I’m not quick to give up good wood furniture, especially storage pieces. But they don’t always have to be in the “ correct” room. Is there some other furniture item that’s not as nice or useful that you’d be willing to remove or relocate to make room?
