There are several plants or "crowns" growing in the pot you are asking about. Sometimes they can be gently pulled apart, holding the plant and roots that it attached to at the same time and either teasing it apart or if you have to, cutting the plants apart with a knife. Each crown has a central growth that all of its leaves radiate from.

You can also leave it as it is if you are not comfortable dividing it. Multiple growth african violets will bloom just as well as single crown plants. With all of the plants in your pot, if it got enough light and was fertilized regularly it would produce more flowers than a single plant alone in a pot. Some people like single plants, other african violet growers will intentionally grow multiple crowned plants. All trailing african violets are multiple crowned plants.

If you decide to divide it and a plant breaks off from its roots, it can be set into a new pot of soil, remove a few of the lower leaves and it will produce new roots and grow into a separate plant.

Thank you Jeb. I decided to take it apart. I now have 3 smaller plants each with only a few roots and another pot that has most of the root ball attached to a larger plant and at least one smaller plant. I feel confident that the large one will be O.K., but my hope is that all will survive..

If you haven't already, I would encase each of your new plants in plastic bags, and close with a twist tie, especially the ones with the fewest roots. It will help them survive the shock. Good luck.
