I like your sofa and yes, it maybe a small space but you are making it work and I don't think it looks cramped. I like my sofa with that long cushion area - esp for kids etc. One quick thought on looking at your pic is to use stools at your counter (if they are safe for your kids). It would cut out that wicker chair back and just not be such a visual stop. Lots of light! Nice!

It's not ideal since it has both a high back, high arms, and a very wide chaise. But you'll get used to it. It looks comfy. If there's a "next time" look for a lower, but still comfortable sofa, up on legs, so there's not so much bulk, plus two comfortable armchairs.

For anyone following the thread, a sofa and two armchairs provide as much seating as most sectionals with far less visual mass that's eating up so much actual and visual space. That's a more flexible choice for a small space.

What really seems unfortunate is that people sitting down are only facing TV and not your lovely view of the outside, which is an extension of your open living room. A sofa with small chaise and two armchairs facing view would've given you views in both directions and given you longer sightlines to make your living room look larger.

Second, I think it’s the fact that it’s a small space, big sofa and dark color.

I think if the sofa was a lighter color it would feel less cramped.

I agree with kids you picked a great colour for your couch.

What a wonderful room! I think the gorgeous colors from your view and the flooring brought onto the couch would really make it sing.

It's a little tight looking but it looks attractive and workable.

I agree that replacing the island stools with wooden saddle stools that can slide under the counter would eliminate some of the visual clutter in that spot.

Another minor change that will help would be to slide your rug so it's partially under the tv cabinet. It will make the couch/tv look more cohesive.

I think for the place you are in life, this is perfect. It reminds of the gray sectional I had when my children were young. And, it was in a smaller space than yours.

Thanks everyone. Ideally i would have loved to get a lighter couch but our last oatmeal colored couch looked liked like a petri dish when we got rid of it.

When we did movie night at my house when my two daughters were younger, many times the kids chose the floor instead of the sofa/chairs. We had carpet back then = easier to have enough comfy space for crashing on floor (even with a friend or two).

I would just make sure that the area rug is very comfy (+ comfy pad) + have some floor pillows that can be brought out when needed (my youngest actually asked me to buy her a very large dog pillow that she loved to pull out and use on movie night - I remember people looking at us while she was pulling ones off the shelf in order to test them out 😂).

Yes that happens with light colored couches I prefer medium or darker couches

I love your space. It does not look cramped, it looks like a space you will use and enjoy. You did a great job.

Do NOT get a lighter sofa. White does not look smaller it looks vastly bigger. I love the arm style on your sofa it makes it less bulky. I like the simple rug and the simple colors. Do not get lots of bright throw pillows. If you have a busy family there will be activity and color all around. Pillows are when you need movement. You don't. If anything you want to keep that serene feel you have going. I agree about the kitchen stools... But.... if you have little people that fall easily keep the stools you have and one day upgrade to something that can be more easily hidden.

What would happen if you moved the cabinet under the tv behind the couch and use the top as a buffet and brought the couch forward?

Don’t change the sofa - having the chaise on the other side will just block the windows. If you need a small table consider a C table that can tuck under the sofa where you need it - don’t get a coffee table. Comfy floor cushions set up to the sofa would give you tiered family seating for movie nights.

And those cushions can reside elsewhere when not needed

I took note of Boxerpal’s suggestion to keep the room serene. I found these pillows from JC Penny that bring in some color from the view but are still quiet.

Why not just try lighting things up a little with some colorful pillows and try a floor lamp in the corner next to the TV console and remove the lamp on the TV console. It should give you a little more room. Note the pillows and floor lamp in the below images.

Can you take a photo with the credenza door closed? I bet it will look less cramped. I think it’s perfect. I agree with adding some colorful pillows and maybe a blanket folded over the sofa. I think the issue is the grey is en masse and needs to be broken up I would keep the sofa. It looks comfortable for watching movies with the kids and they clearly have room to play on the floor in front of it.
