I found Gabriel today at a local nursery. My three year old boy said ”I like the pink one”. It is very fragrant.

It’s gorgeous, Dianela. And very fragrant too? That’s a winner.

First, I cant believe that your baby is 3, time sure speeds by.

Yes it is VERY fragrant. I had never ordered it because I already have enough hot pinks that are excellent but I have to admit it is very pretty in person. I also picked up Roald Dahl which I left behind at my original garden, and was looking great at the garden center. I have sooo many new roses this year I don’t know how I am going to handle them. I was supposed to not order any and ended up ordering over 30

Kristine I can’t believe it either. He is the curtest most amazing little creature ever. He told the lady at the garden center today he had “a lot of buds” at his house. lol It was just the cutest thing.

Since I’m not a super fan of hot pink I was surprised by how much I like Gabriel Oak. It is in a terrible location at my house and is thriving, with really pretty blooms to boot!

Dianela - what a gorgeous bush!!! I absolutely love Gabriel Oak's fragrance too. Very strong. Mine (new last year) got quite long canes that went in all directions. I love it regardless. :) I'm with you...I was supposed to order 13 and ended up ordering 20 roses. :)

Oursteelers - that's interesting that Gabe thrives even in a terrible location. :)

Great impulse buy, Dianela! The purchase just seems more justified with the endorsement of a child, doesn’t it :) I did the same thing last year after seeing the perfect bloom form and smelling the terrific fragrance. I had two groupings of GO in my previous garden but hadn’t yet replaced it. I didn’t really have a place for it in my current garden but did what we all seem to do well here and just added it to the pot collection but it ended up blooming well even in it part sun location.

Penelope Lively is worth a look if you love Gabriel Oak — i believe they come to the Us the year after England has them. Gabriel oak joined my Garden last fall. he got planted in a bed with spirit of freedom — jubilee celebration - queen of sweden - and penelope lively — looking forward to how this bed will turn out 🥰

GableGarden, I’m very much looking forward to the arrival of Penelope Lively in the USA. That rich pink looks like it will show well in the intense light of my garden. I like the tight outer circle of petals.

Here is a few more. the varying shade of penelope are very interesting. Penelope rooted super easily as well last fall when I cut one of her canes off her and I had two root from her at the time.

I see what you mean about the bud and flower color contrast...it's the first thing I noticed. Soooo beautiful!! And those Gabriel Oak blooms...to the moon and back!

Gabriel Oak is my only rose that opens like this: the buds are open at the top for days before it opens. you can see the swirl of petals. I thought it was due to the heat last summer but it is not hot now. Anyone else experience this? what causes it?

Echo - I can't remember if mine did that. I'd assume it was from having many petals...takes longer to open.

Echo mine is brand new and I haven’t noticed but I’ll pay attention and report back on my buds
