I think your boxwood hedge is classic, not ”dated” at all. They provide structure, perhaps in a more formal setting than in your yard. I might lower the height a little And plant a row of lower annuals in front ( white would be a nice contrast ). i like the idea suggesting an espalier, with something appropriate for your climate. I live in So Cal , see-many espaliered camilias, apple trees, caliandras ( that’s what I have but I realize my climate is different).
