Strange things are happening on Houzz again.

A post suggesting Enkianthus was posted, and my reply wondering which of the 2/3 species with white flowers it was, have now disappeared, along with the image I added showing the leaf structure.

Not Pieris. Wrong racemes and bells too open at bottom. Enkianthus. No idea which cultivar.

Enkianthus perulatus is the fine white one I know of in North America. I'm certain I've never seen one quite so ancient as the one you've shown.

I have had both perulatus and campanulatus for many years. This one is definitely campanulatus, which gets very large. E perulatus would take centuries to get anywhere near that big. Shown is E perulatus which has a different shaped flower.

Exactly. As I said, a white cultivar of E. campanulatus, not a white species of Enkianthus.

I've just had an emailfrom the head gardener, who ID it as Enkianthus cernuus.

It was obtained in 1936 from K Wada who ran Makoneya Nursery in Japan. They even have the original invoice.

Nice. Even if I had known about this species, I wouldnt have guessed it because of the flower color.
