Question about cooktop and sink on same long counter run

Hi there,

I’ve always either had my cooktop and sink opposite each other or kitty corner to each other. We’re finalising plans for a new home and I’m opting to keep the island free of appliances.

For those of you with experience with a long counter run holding both the sink and cooktop, do you have any advice or tips? For instance, what do you feel is the ideal amount of space between the sink and stove? Any organisational or other tips?

TIA!

The image below has already changed somewhat, but you get a sense of the space I’m working with. There is a coffee/tea area next to the fridge and then a walk in pantry.

With nearly 14" on each side of a 3-sided cantilevered island, you'll need additional support unless you select a 3cm engineered stone. Not a bad idea even with the estone.

A common spot for prep is between the sink and cooktop, so I'm guessing your DW will be between the sink and pantry? (To keep it out of the prep zone.) Do you think you'll do most prep on the island or between the sink and cooktop? Consider where you'll put trash. If you have a pullout in the island near the right side (fridge side) it could pull out toward the sink or toward the fridge wall and serve cleanup by the DW as well as prep on the island.

Check the specs for the refrigerator you plan to use to make sure you have enough clearance to open the doors all the way (hinges will likely need to sit proud of that little wall, rather than recessed as shown) and to see how much room you'll have between the island and an open fridge door.

Personally I'd opt for cabinets going to the end of the island on the right rather than having an overhang across from the refrigerator and coffee area. That won't be a great place for seating, so why not have more storage, and less worry about overhang support?

Joseph, thank you, great point. Related to Chicagoans point as well, I think I might do open shelves on the right side and possibly on the far aisle side of the island, so there can be some support mitigating the cantilevering issue. I may also do cabinets all the way to the right.

Chicagoans, to your questions, yes, DW between sink and pantry. I expect prep will be done on the island - great suggestion placing the pull out on the right/fridge side, that makes good sense.

Thanks for the points about fridge specs. I haven‘t chosen a fridge yet, and don’t think I can get cabinet depth where I’m building, so I do need to consider that. I have about 49” in that aisle at the moment, but I increase that a bit if needed.
