Do I need to give dimensions of the room?

It would be helpful if you could give dimensions of the room and the furniture pieces. Not knowing these I can suggest the bed would look better centered on the wall, the hardware on the furniture may be able to be changed to update the pieces, the drapes could be changed to something more full and longer. I would do a beautiful vibrant quilt (s) on the bed, curtains from a color in the quilt, and art on all of the walls. Pick art pieces with your early Americana theme- barns, farm landscapes, greenery, animals.

I don't see any reason to paint the furniture, it looks like it's in excellent condition. However, if you do decide to paint it, it would look great in white, or a light sage green or light blue. If you DIY, be sure to research how to do it and take your time. To do it right is time consuming. If you don't think you need both dressers in the room, remove the chest and put the piece with the mirror on that wall so you can center the bed on the wall it's on. Then add another nightstand. They don't have to match. Claudianne's idea about a quilt is good. I would be careful about doubling down on the early American theme, however. It would be easy to take it too far. I think not being 100% on theme will make the room look more modern. Decide on the wall color after you make the other decisions. Don't be afraid to use a color instead of a neutral.

I think the room feels cramped with all three pieces of furniture. Guests will never fill all of those drawers. I'd get rid of the tall chest. Leave the dresser as it provides a lot of great space for people to put belongings on.

I'd paint the room a more serene color. Add a white throw instead of brown at the end of the bed. I concur with getting another mirror. The current one is really top heavy and makes the room feel smaller. Get lighter colored curtains. If after all of this you still feel the dresser needs to be painted, then consider it.

I'd get a less frilly looking lamp for the dresser. Get plug in sconces for each side of the bed so there is more available surface area on whatever night stands you choose. I suggest wall hung shelves as bedside tables so they take up less space on the floor.

The bed is beautiful. It and the dresser are enough Americana for one room. Focus your artwork one some other images or abstract art that you like. The room doesn't have to have a theme other than relaxing and as spacious as possible.

For a guest room you need to provide a place for one or more suitcases plus a chair to sit on when putting on shoes. Please think about living in this space as a guest not as an interior decorator. I'd replace the tall dresser with a comfy chair that one could use while scrolling the internet.

I have never had a dresser in my guest room I do however have a bench at the end of the bed for unpacking a suit case , hangers and some open shelves in the closet for clothing. A nice couple of hooks for bathrobes and a nice stack of large bath towels with hooks in the guest bath for those . I think the bed is good if going in a very traditional style . I would do a nice small deck and chair to serve as a spot for a laptop, some new larger lamps and new bedding and maybe new drapes to go with the new bedding. I stay away from flowered feminine looking bedding but think 5 star hotel room as far as decor and bed and any thing else that makes spending the night a total comfort zone. Some nice art on the wall no mirror there at all just a nice large piece of art . I love pisley prints for bedding not too girly but a nice bit of a print Always white sheets and I iron all my bedding always This a nice one with the wood you have and walls painted a color from the bedding and drapes to match the walls in maybe a faux silk. I agree a nice chair is always a good choice too

Sorry so long to answer, as I was working.

The dimensions of the room are 11.5 ft from the closet side to the window side, and 12 ft the other way. The dresser is 58"w x 19"d x 20" H., the chest is 36" W x 19" D x 48" H, the night stand is 25" W, 17" D, 24" H. The headboard posts are at 54 1/2" and the footboard posts are at 42-1/2". The closet including frame is 53.5" W, and the window is 33.5" w on inside.

I will attach the headboard of the bed as it is covered by pillows. Just to clarify, I don't care for the Early American furniture style/decor at all- but for some reason I find the bed pretty. I guess that is why I had thought about painting the dresser or chest (which ever one I keep) as I could replace the hardware with something more modern. Wouldn't I have to paint to replace the hardware? I absolutely hate the hardware on the dresser/chest. Also, I would llike 2 nightstands/tables, and I feel like the one in the picture is too "squatty." If I go with the stained bed, a painted dresser (w/ new hardware), what type nightstands/tables would I get?

I like the idea of a white blanket/comforter on the bed instead of brown, and lighter drapes, as well as a chair to replace the chest unless it will be crowded. Agree to the larger lamps.Also liked the option of a bench at the end of the bed, but realize I couldn't do both the bench and dresser.

I love the paisley print- it looks very much like the Pottery Barn print on the bed now. I have attached a pic closeup of both the headboard and print of duvet cover.

This is a painted chest that i found i liked the oaint color and hardware. any op on how that would work in the room? Also, how involved to paint this do you think? will i need to spray?

Now that I have given measurements, does that change what pieces I should keep in the room? Additionally, does clarification that I don't really like the Early American style change anyones ideas/comments?

To paint the chest, spray is best, and you need a good paint - as used for kitchen cabinets, like BM Advance. It is a process - sand, prime, sand again with fine sandpaper, first coat, sand again, final coat.

If you don't need the chests and don't like the style, just sell them and get bedside tables and lamps you like, a bench at the end of the bed and a comfy chair and lamp for your guests. No sense ruining those chests with paint if you don't need to use them.

Also after the tall dresser is gone, add a footstool or pouf for the corner armchair so your guests can sit back and put their feet up. A floor lamp behind it for reading.

Place the little Tiffany lamp bedside for less glare and get two tall skinny lamps to flank the mirror to balance the height....with lampshades that provide soft light when using the mirror.

Remove everything else from the chest and place a large flat tray for keys, water, etc.

You can always use contemporary art and fabrics to update the space...no painted furniture...it would add a farmhouse look.

A clock radio is handy to tune into local stations, the game, etc.

Rather than a thick comforter, cotton quilts are not too hot for sleeping.

Books and mags about your region.

Folding luggage racks.

You might consider getting another lamp for the nightstand and perhaps look at doing some lighter bedding and window treatments. So I am just now getting back to this project. I have moved everything out of the room except for the bed and 1 nightstand. I would like 2 nightstands, a bench at the end of the bed and a chair/footstool in the corner as suggested. Any ideas/suggestions/photos on 2 matching nighstands? I am leaning toward metal, or possibly 2 painted. Thank you!

Also any suggestions on style of bench or chair for the room. I just want a serene relaxing functional guest room. I am just not great at coming up with ideas!

One more thing- in reference to adding art. Most of my guests are close family. I was thinking of using photographs as wall art. Not sure how much to do, how many photos to use. Just thought they would find that interesting.

Have you changed the carpet and paint yet? Can you hand draw a quick floor plan of the room that includes walls, window openings, door openings and closet opening?

We think we will actually be moving. That is one reason I went ahead and got rid of the chest & dresser. So the carpet and paint have not been changed. I figure I am safe in at least being on the lookout for 2 nightstands & bench as that should fit any bedroom. Probably same on the chair.

I see. No sense investing too much in the room if you don't plan on being there long term then. I presume you'll take the bed, nightstands and bench with you when you move then and continue to use them in your own home. IMHO, painted nightstands would look nice in the room and with the wood bed. You'll want to keep the height of the bed in mind when choosing nightstands. If there is no chest and dresser in the room, I would consider nightstands with drawers. I have that in my own guest bedroom where i don't really have room for a dresser and friends who just spent a week over the holidays told me how nice it was to have a few drawers to unpack their things. Would you mind measuring the height of the bed to the top of the mattress and also giving me an idea of budget?

28" is the height to the top of the mattress. I was thinking around $250 each, but if I do painted, I will probably find an older pair and paint them myself. Thank you!

Do not invest in new pieces if you are moving. How many guests do you anticipate hosting prior to your move? Hold off on this project until you are in your new space as the finishes and size of the new guest room may inform your choices.

Thank you! You are probably right! Just thought that if I paint nightstands, I could go ahead and do that as we have lots of space outside for this. If I decide to do this, what size nighstands would you recommend. I like the idea of having drawers in them.

I know you posted that youv'e gotten rid of the chest and dresser but will post anyway. Those pieces could have been changed up quite a bit. I think the dental moulding could have been removed. Hardware, of course, could have been changed out. The bottom moulding could have been altered and you might have been able to put new feet on. Unless a piece is an heirloom or very valuable I'm ok with painting furniture. I do love to give furniture a distressed finish. LOL, that can be used to hid numerous mistakes and faults in finish.

Any nightstands with at least one drawer is a good idea for guests. I like one drawer with an open lower area. One dresser is also enough unless someone is moving in for a long time.
A great addition is a foldable luggage rack. Some people will just work out of their suitcase if the visit is a short one.
Plugs near the bed, correct-height lamps for reading, different pillows (hard or soft) and comfy bedding that accommodates those who need two blankets and those who like a sheet in winter.

I have a large dresser with empty drawers for guest to unpack into, and many do not do so and instead choose to live out of their bag or back pack. I have bedside tables with one small drawer and an open bottom with a shelf. This space is highly used. My mom puts her knitting or magazines or purse there. People put their laptops or backpacks there. An open cubby seems to be a favorite. And the bonus is it makes a room feel more airy and open than a closed chest of drawers next to the bedside.

I used to have a very large guest room with a chest of drawers on either side of the bed. It was lovely. But for any room that is not large, I prefer an open nighstand. I also like wall hung plug in sconces. It leaves more surface space on the nightstand.

I got off Facebook Marketplace matching Ikea nightstands in black, very similar to these. I added solid brass pulls. They look great and feel much more high end than they are.
